Virgil Van Dijk stresses Liverpool’s transfer necessity; ‘future’ Klopp plan inadequate.

Virgil van Dijk’s dominant presence has allowed Liverpool to overlook a specific transfer requirement over the past five years.
Whenever fit and available, Van Dijk has consistently started as Liverpool’s left-sided center-back, accumulating 164 Premier League appearances in red, all of which were starts. He has been a constant pillar of strength in one of Europe’s best defenses. However, now at the age of 32, Klopp needs to offer him occasional rest.
This summer, Liverpool has shown interest in signing a new left-sided center-back, ideally one who is left-footed, as all of Klopp’s current options favor their right foot.
Liverpool’s situation stands out compared to other top English clubs, as not having a true left-footed option is relatively uncommon. Manchester City has Joško Gvardiol and Nathan Aké, Arsenal has Gabriel Magalhães and Jakub Kiwior, Manchester United has Lisandro Martínez, Newcastle United has Sven Botman, Chelsea has Levi Colwill, and after signing him this summer, Aston Villa has Pau Torres.
Liverpool lacks a comparable player in this position. Yet, this hasn’t posed a problem due to Van Dijk’s exceptional defensive prowess over the years, and his distribution from the back that enables Liverpool’s attacks, especially through Mohamed Salah, who often benefits from Van Dijk’s lofted diagonal passes.

While Van Dijk’s contribution has been invaluable, Liverpool acknowledges the need for backup. Despite being linked to various players for this role, no signing has materialized. As Deadline Day approaches on Thursday and the summer transfer window closes at 11 pm in England, Liverpool’s transfer activity is coming down to the wire. There is still consideration, but this could potentially become an issue for future transfer windows.
During a match against Newcastle United, a costly error occurred in the 28th minute. Van Dijk committed a foul on Alexander Isak to prevent him from scoring after a through ball was played to the Toon striker. This resulted in a red card for Van Dijk, making him unavailable for the upcoming Premier League game against Aston Villa.
It’s uncertain who will replace Van Dijk in Klopp’s lineup, but this incident serves as a reminder of the left-footed void at the back. Gomez or Matip will likely step into the role, both accustomed to playing on the right side next to Van Dijk. Aston Villa has scored the second-most goals in the league, meaning Liverpool’s defense will be tested in the coming days, made even harder without Van Dijk.
Ahead of the chaotic Deadline Day, Klopp must acknowledge the necessity for a left-footed defender before the window closes. However, it remains to be seen whether a reinforcement will be secured.
