No host nation have lost the opening game of the World Cup. Can Qatar maintain that record?

Enner Valencia scored the opening goal of the World Cup for Ecuador in just 3 minutes, but it was disallowed after a VAR check in an extremely controversial manner.

  1. I thought everybody understood the offside rules, but judging by the comments in this video, I guess not. It was offside. Period. With that said, I'm glad Ecuador won! I was rooting for them!

  2. Right – all sorts of confusion in the comments, let me clear it up. Oh and by the way, I was in a pub with 50 people and absolutely nobody could figure out why it was offside, even Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer didn’t know, but it IS offside let me explain;

    1) The free kick is taken and every Ecuadorean is on-side.
    2) The Ecuadorean chap who heads the ball is on-side, but at that point the receiving player is offside from the knee down.
    3) The Qatari player like 2 meters towards the goal is NOT playing the Ecuadorean on, because the last man back always counts as the goalkeeper even if they are not.

I’ve seen folks say that because the keeper touches it first it means he can’t be offside, a reminder that it’s when the ball is played not when it is received.

TL;DR; I absolutely hate to say it but it is offside, but I’m glad the Ecuadoreans won they played well.

  3. Am I the only person seeing that there is clearly a Qatari play right in front of the play? It doesn't matter about the goal keeper. Off sides is only when you get behind the defense without the ball. Clearly there is a defender further down the field.

  4. The point (MOMENT)at which you judge "Off side " is when the ball is kicked, NOT WHEN IT ARRIVES AT THE GOALKEEPER AND PLAYERS.! There was no off side at that point.

  5. It was ruled dishonestly so. Firstly, it is not this touch that played the pass. This touch was received from the free kick where every player was onside when it was taken. It's not about when you receive the ball but your location when the pass was released. Ecuador was robbed. Yes they won but we all know goal difference plays a role in determining who goes to the next round.

  6. This is NOT offside because the moment to measure off or onside is the moment the pass leaves the foot of the player passing. At that moment there was no Ecuador player offside. They claim the right foot was off side but this was true at the moment of receiving the pass and tehrefore irrelevant.

  7. And what about:
    1. Keeper made the play(not Ecuadorian player) in moment of offside/''offside''
    2. GKs butt seems in that same line with ''offside'' leg in that moment (wich would make GK second defender and then – no offside. Why didn't GKs butt presented by var? It doesn't calculate all parts of the body? )

  8. There should be a limit to how far back they can review. The pass to the Valencia was clean when he initially scored. What if it had taken 4 or more quick passes before the goal was "scored"? The more leverage the refs have, the more controversy.

  9. So why they compare with the qatar player behind the equador player instead of the keeper and qatar player flying in? There are clearly 2 players and a keeper offside here. Honesty goes a long way.

  10. He is actually offside. And I honestly doubt this would have been caught by the referee iff there was no technology. Really impre tough, this is probably one of the craziest situations that can happen on an offside situation.

  11. It’s definitely offside but what gets most people confused is that in the offside frame there are actually two people behind the keeper one doing a header and other being offside
    Crazy but true

  12. What R we even talking about??? Off-side is evaluated when the pass starts, not when it is received. At the moment the pass started – it was a free kick from the midfield area – every Ecuador player was in-side by meters. This call was outrageous. Lucky enough, Ecuador went on scoring a few more!

  13. fi 9anoun el jdid kif yo5roj el goal iwali dernier défenseur ma3naha elli mkassar el hors jeux iwali goal donc madam sa9ou m9adma 3al goal iwali hors jeux = hors jeux s7i7 bel 9anoun el jdid

  14. It's when the ball is passed and not received that call was totall bs the player was far behind the defender when the ball was initially passed

  15. What you are showing is not an offside violation. He was onside when the kick was taken. His position when a defender touches the ball doesn't matter.

  16. What u mean by the leg coming out
U didn’t mention the ball play at the very moment
    It doesn’t show the alignment
Don’t always jump to referee conclusion retards n zombies

  17. Throwback when everyone was surprised by this new highly precise offside technology.
Sorry Qatar for our false accusations, it is clearly an offside.
