Luke Shaw has been one of Solskjaer’s key players in a Man Utd side that sit second in the Premier League table. Shaw has played at a top level going forward, as we’ve seen in recent performances since the turn of the year against Liverpool, Arsenal, Southampton and Everton where he set some big chances up for Marcus Rashfdord, Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani. In addition to his outstanding attacking contributions – we watched Luke Shaw handle one of the best forwards in world football, Mohamed Salah. When Manchester United faced Liverpool at Anfield in January.

Since the turn of the year Shaw has been, without a doubt, the best full back in the Premier League. Statistically he’s up there with the best creators in the league, let alone defenders.
In fact in 2021, he’s created the fourth most chances, The second most big chances,
Has the highest expected assists And only Jack Grealish has registered more assists than United’s left back. Unsurprisingly he ranks first in all of these metrics amongst defenders.

Since the start of last season, Solskjaer’s system has been all about allowing the front four to combine and whilst the full backs have there to hold the width, they’ve not been expected to create all the chances like Liverpool’s have. But with the increasing output from United’s attackers, opposition have tended to defend narrower which has opened up space out wide for the full backs to take advantage of.

Take Man United’s opener in the 9-0 win over Southampton. Lindelof in possession for United. He looks for a long diagonal over the top for Rashford who collects near the corner flag. Rashford turns but goes back to Shaw who takes one touch and picks out Wan-Bissaka who’s on the move at the back post. This was a really good goal from United and it really shows what Solskjaer is trying to do at Old Trafford. First the direct ball from Lindelof looks to capitalise on the pace of the forwards but it doesn’t quite come off. Then as Rashford collects he’s quickly doubled up on by Djenepo tracking back which opens up massive space for the supporting Shaw. Then as the ball goes back to the left back, United have loaded the box with three forwards plus Wan-Bissaka’s attacking run which gives Shaw plenty of options. But he picks the correct one and United take the lead.

  1. Robertson is 100000x better, chillwells better, reguilon is, tierny is better, targetts having a better season. he aint even uniteds best, telles is wayy more talented, jhee even marcus alonso is better🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  2. It's great to see Shaw finally reaching his potential. He had a slow start to his career at United but then was finally looking the part prior to his leg break. The injury effectively cost him 2 years and then it had a clear psychological impact on him. You could see that he rarely made overlapping runs and dribbled considerably less. But, this season we're finally seeing him take his game to another level. Hopefully more to come as well and fingers crossed he can remain injury free!

  3. I’m sorry but I just don’t fundamentally agree, cancelo’s positional play has been outstanding as well as cresswell has improved exponentially from last season with a great defensive and offensive play this season. Despite struggles, Robertson has proven why he is the best lb in the world as while Trent has struggled, he has shown his defensive solidity.

I think that there has been some bias in this opinion about Luke Shaw

  4. He's been very good defensively and in his passing and progression for a while, great to see him improve his attacking threat recently to become a real top class full back

  5. What do you think about Manchester united's striker situation with Cavani being our only true No.9. Who would be a viable option for United to go for in the transfer window? Or do you think we already have a player that can make that role their own?

  6. Top break down Dave. Shaw has been huge this season. His fitness also looks under control. Just wish United wouldn't concede as much, as Luke would be in my FPL team. Love to see central defenders transfet targets video. I think Pau Torres or Kante would be my choice.

  7. luke shaw should be tried for crime against football. All along he was capable of putting such dangerous crosses in the box but for some reason he chose not to.

  8. he's no longer scared about getting injured again which he was under Jose do did Jose's mind games work and helped Shaw over come his fear of getting injured plus the fact he's always fighting for his place like when Williams came thro he pushed himself and now with telles he's pushed himself further
