Liverpool ‘have engaged in discussions with agents representing Jaden Philogene.’

According to a report, Liverpool have conducted negotiations with the representatives of Jaden Philogene, the winger from Aston Villa.

After spending a season on loan with Cardiff City, where he scored five goals and provided one assist in 39 games, the 21-year-old Jaden Philogene has returned to the West Midlands. Although his performances in the Championship were not outstanding, he has been given an opportunity to showcase his abilities during pre-season under the guidance of Aston Villa’s head coach, Unai Emery.

During Villa’s pre-season friendlies, Philogene managed to score a goal in their 2-0 Premier League Summer Series victory against Fulham. However, he is now encountering tough competition for consistent starting opportunities.

Villa made a significant investment by acquiring Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for £51.9 million during the summer transfer window. Additionally, they have other wide options such as Philippe Coutinho, Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia, and Bertrand Traore. These signings have further added to the competition for playing time on the wings.

Having emerged from Aston Villa’s youth academy, Philogene has appeared in just five senior games for the club, contributing to two goals. According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool has developed an interest in the young player.

Both Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, and the club’s recruitment team are reportedly admirers of Philogene. Talks between the player’s representatives and Liverpool have been ongoing, exploring the possibility of a summer transfer.

However, the report also mentions that Newcastle United is actively pursuing a deal for Philogene and has engaged in discussions with the player’s representatives during this summer transfer window. Newcastle holds an advantage in negotiations due to their qualification for the Champions League, whereas Liverpool already possesses a well-stocked forward line, featuring talents like Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Ben Doak.

Despite the competition, Klopp is said to be leading a drive to recruit promising young talent, and Philogene’s versatility is believed to make him an enticing prospect for the German manager and Liverpool.

Philogene is adept at playing both as a left-winger and right-winger, and he has represented the England Under-20 team on four occasions.

Although Liverpool is closely monitoring the 21-year-old’s developments, he is not expected to be their primary target at the moment. The Reds’ current focus is on acquiring a new number six to fill the void left by Fabinho, who completed a £40m transfer to Al-Ittihad at the end of July. This departure adds to the list of midfielders who have left Anfield, including Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, James Milner, Leighton Clarkson, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool has recently welcomed Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister as new signings, and they have quickly become regular starters in the team’s pre-season matches. Additionally, the possibility of signing Southampton’s Romeo Lavia to replace Fabinho is being considered.

Liverpool’s pre-season preparations will culminate in a friendly against SV Darmstadt 98 at Deepdale on Monday, followed by their opening Premier League fixture against Chelsea on August 13.
