FC Basel head coach Murat Yakin praised his team despite losing 2-1 at home to Chelsea in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final on Thursday.
Murat Yakin, FC Basel coach:
“You know my team always wants to play very offensively, they like to play out wide and they wanted to score goals. I cannot just stop them playing offensively. The players tried to score the first goal of the tie, I just let the team play. Towards the end, of course I was a bit unhappy. It looked like Chelsea were happy with the 1-1 draw. But then we were not focused enough and then they scored a goal to win, but we tried and I let my team play their game.”
Murat Yakin, FC Basel coach:
“We are talking about two different teams, who play a different kind of football. Tottenham tried to play in a more creative way and we were able to play our game against them. Chelsea played more defensively than Tottenham. We were looking for counterattacks to score. But we did manage to keep them busy on their side of the pitch. This might not have freed as many spaces as we needed to play our game and it got complicated. But I think we still have a chance to win the return leg, we will have to put together a great performance. Ideally we would not have conceded any goal, but it will be difficult. But obviously we will go there and do our best.”
