    Monday Night Football pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher agreed that the best defender in the Premier League is currently Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta.

      Honorable mention Laurent Koscielny. Much improved this season and doesn't benefit from great protection from midfield (no Diaby, Ramsey and Wilshere decent but not on same level defensively as Matic/Ramires and Fernandinho/Fernando. Great pace and good in the air.

      Many people here talking about Kompany. 
      I think with the amount of experience these two EX-DEFENDERS have beats yours by a 1000 miles, so let's just listen to them. They're both unbiased, and they ALWAYS make a good point. 
      They're not saying Kompany isn't great, but the number of mistakes he makes, compapred to others at Chelsea is a lot more. 

      For example, on their worst days, Terry and Cahill are still pretty good. On their best, unbeatable. Azpilicueta barring that one mis-timed tackle this season, has been flawless… FLAWLESS. You look at Kompany (not just this season, even the last two) He does things defenders shouldn't do….

      azpilicueta is best defender without a doubt and iam united's fan only his mistake is red card again palace

      So many comments didn't hear the question properly. "Who is the best defender in the PL"? Not, who bombs forward best or who's got the most pace etc. Remember Azpilicueta came here as a RB. Unlike most other Tom, Dick and Cunt I can't disagree with 2 of the best English defenders of recent years.

      People forget that Chelsea's defence is excellent because they WORK AS A TEAM. Mourinho is a defence specialist, he always gets his defenders to work hard on defending together. The defenders themselves are not exceptional (par maybe Terry but really he is past his best), they just are trained very well and so is the rest of the team in covering the back 4. 

      In terms of individual defenders, Kompany is undisputedly the best defender, his ability is above the others in the PL.

      Mertesacker got to be the best defender in the premier league, I mean look at the guys pace, which Is lightning quick. Arsenal also have the best defensive record in the league too. XD

      I thoroughly disagree with Azpilicueta being the best defender in the league. That honour falls to Vincent Kompany. Or at the moment maybe even John Terry, Gary Cahill or Brani Ivanovic.

      Best defender gotta be Ivanovic… when he's in position NOBODY can get through him, not even the likes of Messi and Iniesta… and when he's attacking and entering the other teams box he gives Costa and Hazard the freedom to drive in and get spaces… Best fullback in the world… his only problem is that when he goes forward, he leaves the right side vulnerable… Azpi on the other hand is solid and maybe the best 1 on 1 defender, but he rarely supports the offense and most importantly, when Terry gets caught out of position, Azpilicueta never covers up for the gap, we've seen that in the Swansea's second goal against Chelsea… Azpi made an amateur's mistake that day which led to goal, and he repeated that same mistake many other times but Chelsea were lucky not to concede….

      Ivanovic is the best defender in the league by a country mile and this is coming from a liverpool fan! koschilyn is my second choice its just arsenal that let him down hes an amazing defender on an individual basis!

      Hummels and Pizczczcek
      Zabaleta and Kompany
      Chiellini, Koscielny, Ramos, Paletta and Ricardo Rodriguez

      Kompany is the most over-rated player in World football. He's a good defender but not world-class like people make him out to be. I admire him as a player he works hard, is a great leader and very well-spoken if you've seen him in any interviews. But he makes so many mistakes, more than any other top tier CB. People think that just cause he's rated highly on FIFA and he's the champions captain that makes him one of the best in the world. It doesn't, he's nowhere near the level of Ramos, Silva, Godin and Hummels. Even in the PL i think Kosielny and Terry and both better.

      Humiliated in the World Cup, a laughing stock in the Euros, nowhere in the Champions League – yet these English pundits have the nerve to tell us how football should be played.

      Very underrated by us Chelsea fans itself…. Azpi can play LB RB CB CDM LWB RWB it's only as wingback he's bit unsure but most of the time he'll give a 7/10 or above performance….
