The fundamental difference between to two sports is the that NRL players must be skilled in both offense AND defense. In NFL they switch players between defensive and offensive plays. So basically each player only plays for roughly half the time plus there are lots of stoppage time were they basically all stop playing and do nothing but talk. Lol. Rugby players play for the full 80 minutes (unless they get either binned or substituted). There's also very little stoppage time.
NRL has gone soft nowadays. Use to be tough
