Martinez had a lot of doubters coming to a country and league where 5ft 9 centre halves were even less than an anomaly. Been an inspiration, to the point where his height needs disregarding because it almost cheapens his praise, he’s just a top player outright. He hasn’t just come to the league and got by, he came to a disjointed and unstable defence and in his debut season was arguably the best performing CB in the league. He left Ajax as their player of the year so his pedigree was there but even then, he has surpassed expectations. To have the impact he’s had having been the complete opposite of a prototype Premier League CB is commendable and deserves immense credit. Here are 5 Things We Have Learned so far about Lisandro Martinez…

  1. In his first year he's easily become my favourite current United player.

We often complain about players not giving 100%. Martinez is too competitive to allow that come in to his game, and i love it.

  2. Was by far the best signing IMO untill he got injured. Gave the team their balls back. They were absolutely sackless b4 he arrived. It was so bad I was saying to my friends when Eth was coming. I hope he brings a couple of those Dutch kick boxers with him and makes them spar for training to get some fight back in the team. But are lil butcher did the job perfectly.

  3. Not a united fan, but this bloke deserved way more mention for TOTS. His injury at the end took away his chances, but even before then – pundits were talking like the good cbs were from arsenal, city plus botman

  4. There are certain players you just love that represent your team and they genuinely show the passion. Lisandro and Casemiro are both great examples. I just really like how this guy has proved everyone wrong. His worst game id say was Liverpool away but then the whole team was bad that day. Dont recall him having a bad game where he was singled out. Hes an absolute machine and a perfect example of showing the height doesnt matter its how you're using your body to get an advantage over taller players

  5. I made a tweet a while ago about how I believed he was probably better on the ball than Daley blind.
At a point during the season after the world cup, ETH started subbing him in and he'd change the game just with his passing. It was bunkers man was playing in defence and changing games.

  6. Needs back, up in the "destroyer role" aspect of CB work. Lindelhof and Shaw did well in his absence, though not having that element so developed in their respective games.
Had real hopes for the apparently still injury-prone Bailly, on loan at Marseille…
But given that probably nobody will be bought in this will-surely-be-another-messed-up transfer window (due to club sale delay), he should remain an option for return to the squad.🤔

  7. I refuse to call Licha “rascal”, “bastard”, “butcher”. Mate you can be all of these things, but you need footballing pedigree to back those up. Attitude ain’t everything. It cheapens the background work he does to improve and train.

  8. The game against Arsenal showed exactly who he is.. gets a cut on his head, then scores a header while nearly being kicked in the head, he went for it without hesitation.. and then making that tackle in our box and having 2 players land on his head… just an absolute beast
