Hosts Qatar stand on the brink of elimination just two games into the World Cup after a 3-1 defeat to Senegal at Al Thumama Stadium.

Qatar are rooted to the bottom of Group A with one game to play and will be the first nation eliminated from the tournament if the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador later on Friday.

Boulaye Dia (41) and Famara Diedhiou (48) struck either side of half-time to put Senegal in control as they set about responding to their opening-night defeat to the Netherlands.

Mohammed Muntari pulled one back (78) with an historic first goal at a World Cup finals for Qatar, but the hosts’ unlikely comeback lasted just six minutes as Ahmadou Dieng restored Senegal’s two-goal lead (84).

  1. The Qataris spent billions, imported thousands of workers to build the facilities, they should have thought of everything and imported a couple of dozen Brazilian footballers, given them citizenship, and it could have had a quality national team.

  2. I mean, to be honest if they were not hosting Qatar would've never made it to the world cup finals in the first place. But at least they have a goal, and Canada still haven't scored yet, they have one up on them.

  3. After watching the abysmal performance against Ecuador I said in a post that: "Qatar had 99 problems and Ecuador was just the beginning". I knew it would take more than the way they played the first game to make it through the group stage. Senegal would play with all they got and Holland would even make it worse for Qatar. With this lose to Senegal Qatar is surly 99% out of the tournament. Let Qatar start growing rugged players for the next tournament.

And great job to our Senegal. So proud of them even without mane. They got a tough one with Ecuador coming which they must win.

  4. The benefit of host Qatar is that they have no where to go, just relax and enjoy the rest of the tourney, they are already home in South East Asia.🇧🇭

  5. That's why a country that has no history of participating in the World Cup should not be the host.
Hosting only with money is unjustifiable and to undermine quality of the World Cup.

  6. South Africa is still better than Qatar. They hosted the 2010 World Cup and eventually grouped, but they drew the opening game against Mexico with Tshabalala's fantastic goal and even defeated France in the last game. South Africa vs France was even considered the greatest World Cup upset in terms of ranking at that time, but that game is not so better than Senegal in 2002, which is an opening game of the World Cup.

  7. After two games n Qatar already out of e WC!!! At least other Asia teams like Saudi Arabia n Japan still upset over Argentina n Germany….and Iran bounced back after heavy defeat against England to beat Wales 2-0!!! But Qatar already eliminated….After 12 years of preparations all of us never thought that Qatar will be eliminated in such a early stage!!! The last game against Holland will be another tough game for them!!! Don't be surprise if Qatar lose that game too….and become e first host to have lost all e 3 group matches in WC history!!!
