Vinicius Jr says “racism is normal in LaLiga” and that “the championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano and Messi today belongs to racists” after once again being subjected to racist chants on Sunday.
The Brazil international was targeted by chants from sections of the crowd at the Mestalla during Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Valencia.
The game was stopped in the second half for 10 minutes as the visibly angry 22-year-old grabbed the referee and pointed towards fans who he felt had abused him.
Vinicius was later sent off for violent conduct in added time following an altercation with striker Hugo Duro.
He tweeted after the game: “It wasn’t the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in LaLiga. In football they think it’s normal, the federation does too – and the opponent encourages it.
“I’m so sad. The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi today belongs to racism.

I was there at the stadium, the monkey noises reverberated around the stadium. It could not be mistaken and it was not a handful of fans but I counted at least 50. They through banana peels, bread, beer bottles, and other food items onto the pitch. It was disgraceful. No to racism as a football slogan has been around for 25 years. Ever since then France and the Uk have shown the way at having zero tolerance. However Italy and Spain are amoung the worst. There is still the believe that racism needs to be overt (such as literally killing someone) for it to be a hate crime. Insults and comments are all just part of the game.

This speaks a lot about the Spanish society and how race is viewed, if la liga created stern penalties such as those handed during crowd invasions and crowds tossing objects onto the field and onto players. The home teams of such fans should also be held accountable so should the fans. Identifying such people is possible. La liga is just too comfortable with racism
