Most people who hate him actually hate being wrong about him being right over and over again.
I don't think Van Gaal brushes that off. He's genuinely disappointed that he failed to build a relationship in which he could teach DiMaria something. Because in his heart he is a teacher, he wants his players to develop, to grow, he cares. He's not from the English tradition in which the manager watches training an picks the best, he's from the tradition of getting the best out of all the players.
So the worst he's got in store for him is teaching DiMaria a lesson from the other end.
