England manager Gareth Southgate reacts after Roy Keane called Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson’s Euro 2020 call-up a ‘huge distraction’.

Speaking before Henderson made his comeback from injury in England’s 1-0 win over Romania, ex-Manchester United captain Keane said: “I think it’s a huge distraction – he’s clearly not fit. I don’t think he should be involved. If he can’t start against Romania, he’s not fit.

“He’s not kicked a ball for three and a half months and he’s going to European Championship? He can’t be right.”

Henderson came on at half-time against Romania at the Riverside Stadium for his first appearance since February 20, when he limped out of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby defeat to Everton at Anfield.

But the Premier League and Champions League-winning skipper was unable to score his first goal for England when he saw a penalty saved.

  1. Penalties are a strange phenomenon, far worse penalties than that have gone in over the years, it was far more a good save than it was a bad penalty, overreaction as per usual by the media.

  2. I have always been a supporter of Gareth Southgate but he is now going down the wrong path with making players 'take the knee'.
He can't see the danger of bringing politics into sport – remember Hitler – well this was part of his game.

  3. Hendo didn't miss, it was on target, the keeper saved the penalty, it was a good save, it was only a friendly, England won the game anyway, get over it.

  4. I won't be supporting England, because of the stupid and stubborn line the fa have taken.why not support a worthy cause like the vololence against women

  5. Henderson is good at controlling the midfield, defensively and offensively, his 2018 world cup performance was decent, but showed amazing consistency and quality during these last two seasons with liverpool

  6. Southgate has picked a 26-man squad, with only five midfielders, two of whom are not fully fit, and originally picked FOUR right backs! Idiotic.

  7. Jordan will be fit enough by the time the group stages are over. Has anyone thought about the experience that will be needed in the knockout stages am sorry Phillips and rice won’t cut it.

  8. Even Gareth then didn’t defend Henderson one bit and that just shows you what type of England manager we have a true blert yes he shouldn’t be taking penalties but it’s not a big deal it was a friendly match.

  9. southgate is a joke. the big european sides are 20 years ahead. same old same old. keane spot as usual. still they will be taking the knee, complaining everyone is rascist we are good at that.

  10. The real distraction is England taking a knee to honor a violent criminal who held a gun to the womb of an expectant mother.

  11. I've watched Henderson for years and taking a penalty off someone is very unusual for him. I suspect his motivation was that the last time he was in a tournament shootout his penalty was saved, he probably wanted to score a penalty so that if he was called upon again in a shootout he wouldn't have the missed penalty on his mind. If that was the plan it somewhat backfired.

  12. Southgate as manager is the real disgrace, absolutely no team is winning anything with that man as manager

  13. Hendo
    100 G/A in 484 games
55 yellow and 2 red cards

    Keane
    101 G/A in 553 games
96 yellow and 10 red cards

Looks like clown Keane had more time outside the pitch and in changing room playing quiz and cards.

  14. The guys a champions league winner and league winner just one year ago why would you not want him in the team I dont get English media sometimes

  15. The honeymoon is well and truly over for Southgate, after a rather 'fortunate' World Cup three years ago. He knows that if England flop and have a poor Euros, he'll be roasted by the media. There will be alot harsher critics in the press than Roy Keane.

  16. But you are distracted, very much so, by the knee.

The sum of your preparations is to plunge the team into undermining controversy over a non football matter.

Either you already know the team is not going to do well, or your managerial ability must be deeply in question.

As long as the players have read your letter and take the knee they are fully prepared?
If they slip up, will we all wonder if they should have taken both knees , just to make sure?

  17. Henderson took a good penalty but it was an outstanding save. That is what can happen with penalties.

That is the answer you should have given Southgate.

And you are supposed to be a football manager???

Ah, you are an F A appointment, aren't you?

  18. C'mon England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😎👍🏻 … That's why I turn on at Kick Off & turn off at final whistle so you don't need to listen to Bullshit by has-been pundits #simples 🦁🦁🦁

  19. England players know exactly how to prepare for a major tournaments,
    BUT
the pundits and media know exactly how to destroy that preparation.. Sad reality but they love to bring down their own players…
