“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world.”
Pep’s trademark over-the-top praise aside, there’s a reason he’s attracting interest.
Born in Brazil, Nunes’ dribbling ability defines his game, completing more take-ons than any other player during the 2021-22 Primeira Liga season.
A high-volume, high-efficiency ball-carrier, the Portuguese international is one of 18 players in Europe’s top seven divisions to attempt 100 take-ons since the start of 2020/21 while maintaining a success rate above 70%.
Only 10 of those players average more than 3 dribbles attempts per 90 minutes. Only five of those are centre-midfielders.
Usually found breaking ankles before driving into the final third from the left half space, Nunes also works hard to recover loose balls in the middle of the pitch.
If Frenkie de Jong really doesn’t want to leave Barcelona, Erik ten Hag would be well-advised to go shopping in Lisbon.
And if Chelsea need an heir to Kovačić, Nunes is one of the few players fit to lace his press-resistant dancing shoes.

Great… Another hype man bigging up the next Bruno.
EFC could have had him for 15m last summer but Benitez didn't want him…
