I'm biased cos I like howe and I think a red is easily justified. Missing the final though is another thing, I can understand a poor foul or consecutive ones but situations like this are different. Also, I think the rule should be reviewed but even then it's not like changes can be implemented mid season
If it hadn't been the carabao Cup final he misses this would be a none-topic. The words on everyone watching's mind were what on earth are you doing? It was a moment of madness. Players have missed finals for suspensions before. No different here. You can't not suspend someone for sentimental reasons.
No

The footballing Gods are conspiring against Newcastle yet again. You can play in 2 consecutive FA Cup Finals in the 90s, but you'll have to play the newly crowned EPL champions both times. By the way, 98 and 99 are the ONLY consecutive seasons where the newly crowned Champions have played in consecutive FA Cup Finals. You can play in the Carabao Cup Final against an evenly matched team…but you'll have to play your 3rd choice keeper. Pull our pants down and spank our bottoms blue, whilst you're at it!
Nick Pope should have thought about all of this when he decided to run 25 yards from his goal and hand ball it. π
It's not even up for debate!! It was such a clear red. One of the clearest reds you'll ever see.
Blatant hand ball almost ended trippers career and stopped a goal scoring opportunity. How is this even a question?
If Newcastle weren't in the final we wouldn't be having this conversation….Nike pope messed up big time so he should be punished in the right way end of conversation
π€£π€£π€£. dumbest debate in football ever… break the rules, get punished..very simple, no debate to be had
why is this even a topic of conversation after all the talk of var failing recently this was a referee making a good decision without the use of var re pope he has to show a red card for that because the law says so end of story why are pundits making a big deal out of it π€£ ok he will miss the final I don't wish that on him at all however what he did was silly really an appeal will be a waste of time aswell why waste energy with that from Newcastle point of view they need to focus on the match and who is going to play against m utd imo
As a Liverpool fan Iβd happily let him play in the final and let him miss the premier league game in sted
Red card means at least 1 match suspension. Can't believe we need to discuss about it. Regarding he shouldn't miss EFL cup as it's in the league. Bruno GuimarΓ£es would have missed the final had the rule reversed
It's a red simple as in the rules gutted for him tbh but on that note Man u should of seen Red yesterday for studs up buy hey ho we can only do are best hopefully we can finish top 4 we just need more bloody goals wish we would shoot more outside the box
ππππππ
The goalkeeper handling the ball and denying a goal scoring chance is the same thing..why else would a goalkeeper try to handle the ball.. why is this being discussed. If klopp said what howe said, you will be saying klopp is moaning!!! He broke the rules..simple as that
From what I saw Pope looked like he tried to head the ball and cocked up, I think the scoop of the ball was baffling I canβt tell if it was deliberate or he inadvertently scooped it when trying to get back up. It was quite odd.
Thought it was harsh not sure on the rules…. the rule has never changed a goalkeeper handballs it outside the box its a red card, he deliberately pulls the ball towards him so salah cant get it not even close.
I can only wonder that if a foreign keeper pulled the same stunt the English media wouldn't be asking questions like this. We all know what the rules are. Furthermore, Sky Sports journalists were writing things like "poor Newcastle" in their match reports at half time. Poor for what? Bad defensive positioning for the two goals, and their keeper stupidly handballing 20 yards out of his own box? That just reeks of media bias, and leads people to believe that everything that happened to Newcastle during the game was unjustified. Mental
Fully justified.
End of.
He handles the ball outside the area- would they be saying the same had it been De Gea? Absolutely not!!!
What?????
Imagine if it was 0-0 and last minute and he never got sent off and liverpool went on to miss out on champions league! Are these people absolutley stupid its a rule! He knew the rule before the clown came running out.
If that was Allison that handled it outside the box would there be all this talk I don't think so! rules are rules ridiculous to be even talking about this
Eddie Howe doesn't know the rules ? Does he watch football ?
So here's the scenario.
Man United bombard the Newcastle goal, but the reprieved Nick Pope is having the game of a lifetime, he makes three Worldies, and nothing can beat him. Game finishes 0-0.
Match goes to penalties and Nick Pope saves all those penalties taken by United.
Newcastle win the Cup, because of that player that was suspended, and should have been suspended, but the rules got bent to allow him to play out of sentimentality…π€
Even with pope we've gone rite of the boil united be looking forward to this game
To be this dumb Tony must have sniffed barrels of glue? Have to admire a man who found his place in life. Next week he argues that Hitler was misunderstood
I like Pope but wasn't harsh getting a red card it's the rules, do think it's weird being 2 different competitons+him getting a ban instead of 3 games in Premiership
Not unfair…. not a debate
No complaints from Eddie Howe on Bruno Guimaraes getting sent off in the semi final then serving his suspension with the 3 PL games before the final.
Sorry I dropped on to this talking crap
Still to me looked like he fell and wanged his head
Unfair? Harsh? Load of nonsense! It was a clear red and this was a pointless conversation! Newcastle should count themselves lucky that Bruno Guimaraes is able to play for them on Sunday! He shouldn't be imo! If you were to get sent off in a semi-final of any other cup competition you would miss the final. Why the Carabao cup has to be different is a joke.
The most stupid statement from a pro football manager. It's simple, you handle the ball outside the box you walk…it's always been that until it's not. Because if Pope didn't do that, Salah scores easily. So, Howe doesn't know that, or is just being silly?
Sorry but if an out field player handles ball in box stopping a goal. But get pen. Then rarely a player gets sent of
Noone was saying this when Casemiro was given a Red Card.
Title says "Was it harsh or unjust" and yet the opening statement from Nat "Deliberately handling the ball outside the box (= Red card in the laws of the game) so how is this even a question?
Why has this video got hashtag Laura woods..?π
Have red cards always carried onto different competitions?? I donβt remember this being the case before
Whatβs Eddie Howe on
I am a newcastle fan , is a straight red card not a 3 match ban ?
Yes
Toon fan.. it wasn't harsh, it is what is unfortunately
I 100% agree, this was a red. That cannot be argued or denied. It's blatant and obvious and fits the rules description for a red. HOWEVER, the rule for a red card needs to change in relation to different competitions. I do not agree that a straight red should ban you from a cup competition when it's supposed to be in it's own bubble. I agree with the amount of games and all but it should be for the next PL games, not ANY game. They either need to make exceptions for reds when it comes to semi-final/finals of cup competitions or If they insist on keeping it that way, they should reconsider changing yellows cards to be counted for all competitions (I don't want that) regardless of the stage, to keep with consistency. I may be a bit biased being a Newcastle supporter though, lol.
