Pedri, at just 20 years old, is already one of the best midfielders in the world. And it’s no surprise that Barcelona have become pretty reliant on his incredible quality and versatility. But have they become too reliant on him?

The stats suggest an astonishing dip in performance when Pedri is not on the pitch. So in this video, I try to explain the many reasons why this 20-year-old is the heartbeat of such an illustrious club. Using data and analysing his performance.

  1. As much praise as one can have for Pedri and his amazing skill and talent, one can also criticize Xavi for not putting effort into building the team's identity and having a real plan. Relying on one player to glue everything together proved to be a big problem. A better approach would be to challenge and guide the others specially with how much young talent he has in the team right now and help improve the unit as a whole. I wonder if he will figure out how to go around one player's injury without making it look like he can't trust the current squad to carry out a plan…..even though personally I believe the current squad (without Pedri) can do wonders if they were to be given a good plan.

  2. Brilliant video. The one additional aspect of his game potentially worth discussing is his defensive ability. He doesn’t challenge incessantly like Gavi or have the physical tools of Araujo but his defensive positioning, reading of the game, ball recovery and press resistance after winning the ball back are incomparable. As much as we suffer from a lack of creativity and progression offensively without Pedri, his absence in defence costs as significantly in transition and puts far more pressure on the back line.

  3. Pedri is such a phenomenal lad. In order to prevent such "tragic" events in the future, should Barça buy a "replacement" or better manage his form so he'll be less injured, in your opinion?

  4. Pedri is there to keep the ball circulated. Barca has a strong hatred for creative midfielders, and playes that take risk. That is why all our AM suffer and eventually leaves the club. You can look as far back as Ronaldinho, Coutinho, Puig, and now Pablo Torre.
I will continue to say it, you can not win games consistently without an Ace, that is a number 10. Or even a hybrid 10. Every dominant team in europe have one or more in their ranks.
Quality wise Pedri is not the best playmaker.

If you need an example of what i'm talking about, look at Ozil, Odegaard, KDB, every elite team modifies their #10. But Barca throws them out. I'm curious to see how Pedri will develop and how his numbers will improve.

  5. I have always thought that after Messi's departure, we won’t be able to experience beautiful moments of individual brilliance but never have I thought that Pedri would change that so soon. Whenever he is with the ball, he can pull of magic at any time and he usually does in every match. So, comforting for supporters, teammates and coach alike to have Pedri on the field because of their ease and comfort with the ball given our way of playing. Regardless of his importance and value to the team, he should not be overplayed and rested whenever possible. This time we might have overplayed him and now he is injured.

  6. So basically, Pedri is like the metronome of this team. I thought as much. He holds the game down in a way no one else can. And since they are playing DeJong out of position, and his defensive abilities are more required these days, you can't see that same magic in Frenkie.

  7. We signed a amazing player

But the problem is now Europe is left. We're not a league team. We should focus on winning leagues/spain cups

But the next step will be Europe. None of these players are proved in Europe

  8. Pedri has that Messi-esque thing to me. Even if it's just 1% of Messi, that's already a gift most don't even dream about, much less have.

For his age, he's unbelievably good with the ball and he was that since he arrived here. Just a naturally gifted midfield player.

Without him, we had to play a completely different style. There's less control and creativity and more sluggish chance relying tactics. It worked against Real but it's not always gonna happen.

I hope he gets back soon. For good or bad, we need him. One could even say we almost depend on him with a huge percentage for our attacks.

We're so lucky to have him.

  9. Great analysis, if you watch Barça videos where players talking and interacting you will see that pedri is a natural leader, a kind of a subtle one, the one that Xavi used to be when he was a player.. but definitely not when he was 20 😅
This man is just crazy, future ballon d'or without any doubt
Xavi should either adapt his approach to make him defend less and rest without the ball like Messi, or rest him in the less complicated games which requires an upgrade of Pablo Torre

  10. Pedri can play for deep, can progress the ball from his own yard, can play final pass and now can score. Fantastic dribbler and ball retention. An all time great midfielder is in making

  11. What catches my attention in your analysis is the lack of Pausa. You've mentioned it before in a previous video. The team doesn't have enough Pausa, which is something Barca midfield has never lacked until now. I see some indecision, wrongly timed and misplaced passes that boils my blood up!😡. It's usually ruins our counterattacks. The only thing perfect in this team right now is Defence. Midfield still has a long way to go. Great analysis as always!

  12. Pedri is a nice mixture of iniesta and Xavi. Elegant on the ball, can carry the ball to the final third, control the tempo and find the killer pass. But we can’t rely on him all the time. That’s why I think Barça needs wirtz, he’s someone who’s more attacking and has that finishing touch/eye for goal. Pedri-Wirtz-De Jong trio😮‍💨

  13. No not really. I think pedri's ability to slow down the game isn't as effective against high intensity teams because he isn't as press resistant against a strong transitional opposition . You can see this in the first half at the Camp Nou against Utd where Utd were comfortably controlling the game when he was playing. As an advanced midfielder, Pedri needs to improve his transitional play and actually speed up his game instead of slowing it down. Barca need to find options to deal with teams that press them well, because despite the score Utd were dominating them.
