Gary Neville has now predicted what kind of Liverpool side will show up at Old Trafford for the upcoming showdown with Manchester United on Sunday.

Manchester United are third in the Premier League table and hold a three-point advantage over fourth-place Liverpool ahead of this weekend’s key fixture.

Michael Carrick has only four Premier League matches remaining during his interim head coach reign at Old Trafford ahead of the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

The 44-year-old United legend received a major boost ahead of the encounter with Liverpool after the Red Devils’ important win over Brentford on Monday evening.

Manchester United were 2-0 up against Brentford at half-time after Casemiro opened the scoring before striker Benjamin Sesko added his name to the scoresheet.

The Red Devils started the match strongly against the Bees, but Brentford fought back against Man Utd in the end-to-end contest at Old Trafford on Monday evening.

Mathias Jensen netted a superb late strike for Brentford in the second half, but Michael Carrick’s men maintained their lead to see out a 2-1 win on the night.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville has admitted that he expects Liverpool to mirror Man Utd’s approach for Sunday’s Premier League clash at Old Trafford.

“But I think you’ll see a more cautious, tighter [and] more compact, more defensively focused Manchester United than you saw in that first half tonight,” he said, as per the Metro.

“I don’t think he’ll start with five at the back, I think that would be wrong. He won’t do that, let’s be absolutely clear.

“But he will get them a lot more switched on defensively. He will be a lot more compact and tight and it will be a case of not making mistakes. Let’s go and make Liverpool nervous.

“I think Liverpool, likewise, will not want to be opened up. I think it could be more of a game of chess on Sunday.”

Carrick pivoted on his tactics for the second half of the Brentford match, including shaking up Man Utd’s formation and adopting a Ruben Amorim-esque set-up.

Neville is convinced that both United interim boss Carrick and Liverpool manager Arne Slot will approach the Premier League match on Sunday with ‘caution.’

“Not quite as much as it was in the second half against Brentford, but I think it could be more of a struggle of a game where both managers are going to be quite cautious,” he added.

“Not in the teams they pick but in the way they instruct their players to go out there and be compact and defensively solid.”

Man Utd and Liverpool’s Premier League showdown is slated for a 3:30pm kick-off time in the UK at Old Trafford this weekend.
