Labour has pledged to support civic and community events, voluntary organisations, and neighbourhood improvements.

The group has said it will do this “while keeping the council tax precept at a minimum,” adding it “will oppose any attempt by the Liberal Democrats to use it as a back door to raise extra taxes for services that BCP should be providing”.

Neil Duncan-Jordan, Poole MP said: “BCP Council decided to create a town council for Poole without public support. But now that it’s happening, it’s vital that decent, hard-working people, who are going to put Poole first rather than themselves, get elected.

“Let’s be honest, many residents think the BCP experiment has failed us. The mindless sale of the Civic Centre, the withdrawal of support for events on the quayside and the failure to organise a proper VE Day event are all evidence that Poole is missing out.

“The town council at least gives us a chance to reclaim some of Poole’s historic identity and promote a sense of civic pride. It also allows us to make decisions at a level that’s closer to local residents.”

Jake Ruggier, Poole Labour chair and candidate for Parkstone, Lilliput & Sandbanks, said: “The sale of the Civic Centre is part of a continuing trend of Poole being ignored since the Conservatives merged us into BCP.

“Reform claims to be something different. They say that residents have been let down by years of Conservative and Liberal Democrat-led councils, and they’re right. What they don’t mention is the fact that Reform in Poole is run by a former senior Conservative who was on the council for 16 of those years.

“Anyone hoping for change from them will be disappointed.”
