Crystal Palace interested in Santiago Bueno
Wolves star likely to leave Molineux
Three other Premier League clubs keen
Crystal Palace are reportedly in a four-horse race to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Santiago Bueno. The Uruguayan is likely to be on the move after his side’s relegation was confirmed.
The 27-year-old has been one of Rob Edwards’ better performers in a season to forget at Molineux. He’s made 25 Premier League appearances, posting two goals and as many assists.
Wolves have failed to beat the drop and a mass exodus of players in anticipated. One of those is Bueno, who has been with the club since the summer of 2023, joining from Girona for £8.5m.
Crystal Palace Eyeing Santiago Bueno
A report from Sport Witness claims that Palace, Leeds United, West Ham United and Brentford have all made contact with Bueno’s camp. He wants to continue playing in the Premier League and could have that wish granted by one of those four clubs.
The Eagles’ interest is intriguing given that the need for a new centre-back has lessened in recent months. Jaydee Canvot’s superb form has seen him become an undisputed starter alongside Chris Richards and Maxence Lacroix.
Oliver Glasner, who won’t be in charge next season, also has Chadi Riad to turn to off the bench. But perhaps the chance to sign the Wolves man for a cut-price fee has enticed the South Londoners.
Edwards is a fan of the Uruguayan, including his ability going forward. He called his strike in a 1-0 win over Grimsby Town in the FA Cup ‘amazing’ and described him as a ‘quiet leader.’
There is no word on Bueno’s preference or which club is leading the race to sign him. He will have two years left on his contract this summer.
Palace Must Be Cautious
While Bueno has performed well and has proven Premier League experience, there’s no reason to get dragged into an auction for the player. Depending on the fee, the Uruguayan shouldn’t be a priority and strengthening other areas of the squad should be the priority.
That includes midfield, with Daichi Kamada set to leave when his contract expires in June. The Japanese midfielder has been crucial for the Eagles and will need to be replaced.
There is also uncertainty over Adam Wharton’s future with Manchester United, and Liverpool are reportedly interested. He ‘expects’ to leave Selhurst Park and losing him would be a huge blow.
For now, all the focus is on finishing the season with another major trophy following last season’s FA Cup triumph. A UEFA Conference League win will go a long way in attracting players to join the club.
