Senior figures at Manchester United are reportedly concerned over whether Michael Carrick can implement a ‘sustainable brand of football’ in the long term if he is handed the permanent managerial role.
The 44-year-old is in the running to become the next permanent United manager after a positive first three months in charge, winning eight times across 12 Premier League games.
While United are also looking at other potential candidates, including Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, Carrick appears to have the backing of the squad to continue in the role after making a strong impression since taking charge.
However, as a fresh report suggests, it appears not everyone at Old Trafford is fully on board with Carrick’s full-time appointment amid concerns over his experience and lack of tactical identity.
Man Utd Officials ‘Concerned’ Over Carrick

According to Manchester United insider SullyTalkz, senior Old Trafford figures are concerned over whether Carrick can implement a ‘sustainable brand of football’ in the long term, as well as his ability to lead the club to silverware given his limited experience:
“One thing I’ve heard is that there is a level of hesitation and wariness amongst senior officials regarding Carrick.
“This doesn’t mean he won’t get the job, but there’s concerns regarding whether he can play a sustainable brand of football long-term and be the man to win us trophies given his experience.
“I expect some level of formal talks with candidates in the near future however it’s not inaccurate to say Carrick is in the lead.
“I also know this: Julian Nagelsmann is admired internally with some form of contact with his representatives held – just to see his availability and viability.
“United have liked him for years now and wanted him when Erik ten Hag got sacked. Vivell has advocated for him internally.
“The main obstacle has always been and will be the World Cup as the German manager is open to joining.”
Prior to his United appointment in January, Carrick spent almost three seasons at Middlesbrough, whom he led to Championship finishes of fourth, eighth and 10th.
The 44-year-old also had a three-game spell as United’s temporary boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021.
United have won two of their last five Premier League games under Carrick, including beating Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Man Utd Dealt Nagelsmann Blow

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Nagelsmann, who is believed to have offered his services to Real Madrid.
The 38-year-old manager is reportedly open to replacing interim Real boss Alvaro Arbeloa this summer, once his contract with the Germany national team expires after the World Cup.
United director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is said to be a particular admirer of Nagelsmann and is ‘pushing hard’ for his arrival at Old Trafford after the season.
