Michael Carrick has turned things around at Manchester United to such a point that Champions League qualification is within reach.

Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January led to Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach.

Manchester United promised to draw up a list of candidates before deciding on the permanent role at the end of the season.

After an impressive run of form, which has resulted in United sitting third in the Premier League, Carrick is now expected to stay on beyond the 2025/26 campaign.

There’s no way United will blow a top five place!

Carrick still has his critics who believe the United job is too big for a coach of his limited experience, especially at the top level.

This season at least, I’m utterly convinced there is no way some of those critics can be persuaded to think otherwise.

United lost against Leeds, and it came as a hiccup for Carrick’s side as they went on to beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the following game.

Many are guilty of overlooking United’s current position. It’s further proof of how quickly things can change at Old Trafford.

With United keeping quiet on the head coach decision, Carrick is being asked about it every week at press conferences. It has now reached a point where he is simply repeating himself.

“I’m not sure, it’s not something in terms of deadline that I’m really chasing,” Carrick told reporters on Thursday, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.

“It will become clear when it becomes clear.

“I’m here at the moment to help the team and the club get results. At the moment, we’re doing alright. We can keep pushing and get better, and that’s generally all I’m focused on right now.

“I’ve said it many times, I enjoy being here, I enjoy the role I’m in. We’ve had some good results and we’re in decent shape. There’s a lot to go, we want to keep improving.

“There’s layers that we want to get to. I’ll see. I keep saying the same things in front of you every week, there’s only so much I can say, but I enjoy being here, I love being here, it’s a real privilege to be in the position I am, thriving with the responsibility that we’ve got.”

This shows that Carrick has United’s best interests at heart.

Rather than getting carried away by the noise that surrounds the club and his job, as Amorim did before him, Carrick is riding the waves and taking each game at a time.

It’s the best possible approach Carrick can take as he continues to impress United staff with his understanding of the club. That is not something we would get with an outsider like Julian Nagelsmann.

Carrick’s approach to managing United’s first team is admirable and stands him in good stead to keep the job.

Carrick will surpass expectations if United finish third in the Premier League this season.

United have won eight of their last 12 matches under Carrick.

However, it appears that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has yet to fully make up his mind over giving Carrick the job.

“There’s a sense of some hesitancy, or some caution, from the hierarchy – who exactly is that?” Laurie Whitwell said on the latest episode of the Talk of the Devils.

“I think Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a pivotal figure in this—on whether Carrick should get the job, whether he [Ratcliffe] would want somebody that is of a personality, a stature, that he would see as fitting Manchester United.”

United are not expected to make a final decision on Carrick until the end of the season, but they could announce it sooner if a Champions League spot is secured.
