Michael Carrick’s latest endorsement for Kobbie Mainoo is the biggest sign to date for what Manchester United must now look for in their next midfield signing.

A prolific — and deeply underappreciated — midfielder himself back in the day, Michael Carrick’s view on Kobbie Mainoo is invaluable for Ineos right now.

After all, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s regime at Old Trafford face the tall order of identifying the ‘right’ type of long-term midfielder that Manchester United need in the summer.

United will lose Casemiro at the end of the 2025-26 campaign and a new midfielder is high on the priority transfer list ahead of the next Premier League season.

Irrespective of the midfielder that Manchester United sign, their partnership alongside Kobbie Mainoo will be the key for the Red Devils going forward.

Mainoo went from undesirable No 1 under Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford to simply undroppable under Man Utd interim head coach Michael Carrick this season.

Speaking ahead of Man Utd’s 1-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday, Carrick told TNT Sports: “Kobbie is still a young player, so it’s important for us to handle his development and help him to learn and improve.”

It was not only surface-level praise that United legend Carrick had for Mainoo, but a methodical dissection of the Red Devils talent’s natural and technical attributes.

“I think his natural attributes are taking the ball and being comfortable in those situations and he’s always had that in his locker from a young age,” he added.

“He is never really [fazed] and he’s got a really levelled demeanour which really helps him and he’s already played in some of the biggest games in football during his career.

“He’s got a lot of positives to his game, including his composure in how he copes with certain things, and his technical ability is there for all to see.”

Mainoo hit the checklist for Carrick across five different key areas, ranging from his comfort level in situations to his ability to take the ball when it is needed.

The 21-year-old midfielder’s skillset, as identified by Carrick, includes his ever-changing technical ability, which is coupled with his composure and demeanour.

When Mainoo’s demeanour, composure, technical traits, comfort level, and ball-taking skills are combined, Ineos have a template for the type of signing needed.

A top-quality midfielder won’t come cheap in the transfer market and Ineos might only be able to afford one roll of the dice with the player they bring to the club.

With such high stakes in place over Casemiro’s long-term replacement, the profile of a Mainoo-esque midfielder must be at the forefront of the major transfer decision.

Mainoo is at the heart of the Man Utd midfield for the future and Carrick’s insight could not be more important for Ineos now ahead of the summer window.
