Burnley take on Manchester City in a crucial clash at both ends of the Premier League table. A defeat for the Clarets will confirm their relegation while a win for City will take them top of the standings for the first time since August.

Pep Guardiola will be keen to build a goal-difference advantage over title rivals Arsenal and things could turn pretty ugly for Scott Parker’s Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.

Burnley vs Manchester City preview

A moment of magic from Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland’s customary goal led Manchester City to a 2-1 victory Arsenal 2-1 and moved them within three points of the Premier League leaders on Sunday.

That means City have the chance to go top for the first time since August and it would be no surprise to see Haaland and the increasingly brilliant Cherki help the Citizens reach the summit in spectacular fashion at Turf Moor.

Back-to-back league defeats for Arsenal have left the door wide open for Pep Guardiola’s side to usurp them and with goal difference now likely to be a huge factor in deciding the title’s destination, City are unlikely to let up against Burnley, who will be relegated if they lose.

City hit the Clarets for five in the reverse fixture and given that 5-1 hammering came before the influential arrivals of Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, there is a fear things could get just as ugly for Scott Parker’s Championship-bound strugglers on home soil.

Burnley’s faint hopes of survival took another huge hit on Sunday as they threw away a one-goal lead to be smashed 4-1 by relegation rivals Nottingham Forest and that is hardly the ideal preparation for a visit from an improving and title-chasing City.

Haaland, Cherki and Semenyo have hit form at precisely the right time and their output has led to 4-0 and 3-0 routs of Liverpool and Chelsea as well as a pair of wins over Arsenal in the past few weeks alone.

The Citizens are back to their relentless best and look set to move top and relegate Burnley with a big win at Turf Moor.

Semenyo set to star again

Despite having arguably his worst game since moving to Manchester in January, Semenyo was still a constant threat on Sunday and could have even found the net if not for an exceptional Piero Hincapie block.

The Ghanaian has been brilliant since joining City, averaging a goal or assist every 129 minutes under Guardiola, and he will be looking forward to facing Burnley having scored in his three previous Premier League games against them.

The Clarets have been shocking at the back all season, conceding a league-high 67 goals, and Semenyo is likely to be one of a few City players to add to that woeful tally.

Humphreys heading for another caution

Young defender Bashir Humphreys is one of very few Burnley players who could get a Premier League move based on this season’s performances and he will be eager to prove his quality after being dropped by Parker recently.

He should come back in after watching on as his teammates shipped four at Forest but his eagerness to impress could lead to a card, as it often does.

Humphreys has been booked five times in just 16 Premier League appearances this season and facing Haaland may result in another yellow.

Burnley vs Manchester City Bet BuilderOver 2.5 goals

Seven of City’s last nine matches have produced at least three goals and they are expected to put a few past the league’s worst defence.

Rayan Cherki to score or assist

City’s chief trickster has scored one goal and provided three assists in his last three appearances, suggesting he will give a shaky Clarets backline a tough time.

Kyle Walker to be booked

No Burnley player has picked up more Premier League yellow cards than the former Citizens defender’s nine and he is likely to be given the runaround by Jeremy Doku.
