“As I said, there has been no real progression. So I cannot say anything new about my contract situation. We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that.

As you guys maybe know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let's see.

I love being here, as I've said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let's see.

I'm completely relaxed. We have five games to go. Then I am going to rest – a big one, after my international break. Then we will see.

The fans' support, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we made it clear what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.

Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. I'm completely relaxed."

I think we will end up extending him, I’ve faith. He wants to stay as well. We’ve seen this happen before with Mo and Virgil and we usually end up extending the players.

  2. Flat_Independence861 on

I think he’ll stay but he’s using Mo’s playbook of contract negotiation and he knows he has all the advantage being Liverpool’s best player at the moment.

  3. Not worried at all. He says he wants to stay, he’s young and a key player, but he knows his value so there’s naturally going to be a lot of back and forth and impasses as they figure out the package.

Just give him the fucking contract and sell him if he becomes a bollox and wants to leave. Sick of top players leaving for nothing. Will they ever fucking learn.

  5. Sounds dumb but maybe we’re waiting for mo and robbo to leave and empty up the wage costs there and save on giving a bigger pay contract early to szobo right now , maybe in the summer he gets it .

  6. He won’t get a better situation than he has here. He can’t go to a club like Madrid and just be a runner that scores free kicks and be loved for it

  7. He no doubt doesn’t want to be playing out of position any more. A few games to fill in is one thing, the issue is he did such a good job he got played there more and more. Which sucks, it’s like getting punished for doing well. Can’t be doing that. No doubt for me that this is part of talks.

  8. While it’s clear he’s been a leading player this season and for that reason he should be extended, I do wonder what his demands are. He’s a fine player but has a lot of limitations and I don’t think if Liverpool’s squad were in good shape that he would be a vital piece, so if he’s demanding really high wages it would give me pause.

How did we sort out Cody’s contract and Ryan’s before Doms? I don’t understand what is the strategy? Is it because they accepted LFC terms and when players counter, the hierarchy delays? Like Ibou, VVD, Salah etc? I guess each contract is different and has its own scenario and outcome

  10. This is purely speculative, but I can imagine the club not wanting to accelerate contract negotiations right now with Szoboszlai, because he is currently the best performing player in an underperforming team, and I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that there will be quite a few players in the squad who are earning significantly more than him, but are not currently performing to his level. Therefore, it could be that Szoboszlai wants parity with those players who are earning more than him but not performing as well as him, so the club could do with waiting until the middle of next season, and seeing if those players have stepped it up in the meantime, as it may help their negotiating position with Szoboszlai.

  11. If I was his agent I wouldn’t want him to sign anything right now. Even if we offered him £300K a week. If Slot stays and we have another awful season then I would want my player to move instead of rotting here.

Bayern, Madrid or PSG would probably take him next summer.

Should have extended him before grav and Gakpo. He can justifiably ask to be top earner. He’s been more important than Salah and VVD this season and I would expect him to be more important than VVD next season. £350-400k a week?

  13. Might be going against the grain here but if Szoboszlai is looking for a Salah/VVD-level package, then I’d cash in on him this summer.

While he’s been one of our only consistent performers this year, I think he is a bit limited and I’m not sure where he fits into our best XI if everyone is performing as we want/expect (mostly Wirtz). At the end of the day, take away the free kicks and he mostly just runs around a lot. He’s not productive enough to be a 10 and too weak defensively as an 8/6.

Think he’s become a bit overrated in this shite season and he’s fully bought into the hype. Granted I’m assuming (and hoping) that Wirtz comes good so that Szoboszlai is surplus to requirements – jury’s out on that right now obviously.

  14. Why would he extend? The club plans to stick with a guy hellbent on playing him RB for a third of its game.

  15. If landlord and gravy can get extensions szobo absolutely should , he’s the only one in the squad who can run

He’s playing the game. He wants to stay. If he wasn’t staying he wouldn’t say anything.

  17. He simply must be given whatever money he wants as a future captain of the club. At least we can cash in when Madrid inevitably come knocking

  18. ContributionOk5599 on

Just sack Slot, add in the don’t put me at rightback clause, put a midfielder next to him that actually prioritizes ball-winning / anchor, and sign the thing

  19. You gave Gravenberch 280k pw. Whatever Szobo is asking for, it’s reasonable in that context. Not his fault Hughes has massively rewarded mediocrity. Pay him.

  20. TroubledMagnet on

I don’t blame him at all for not signing anything at the moment.

Lumped to RB at every opportunity, under a manager that lacks the ability to take you to trophies, and seems content just to not be completely humiliated by the actual contenders, and fighting to qualify for a competition you get demolished in when the knockouts come around.

  21. I think a new manager may change things and that FSG’s claimed backing of Slot is based on the availability of a preferred new manager

  22. Aware-Highway-6825 on

pretty big elephant in the room here no? Wirtz was meant to be the Szobo replacement, and if Wirtz wasn’t so expensive Szobo would probably still be starting in the 10. Wirtz clearly isn’t built to be a premier league LW so he has to work in the 10 drifting to the left, so I wonder if they are even gonna give Szobo a new contract

  23. doomsdayKITSUNE on

I’m starting to understand why Chelsea do long term contracts. Shit, it feels like Szobo has only just joined us yesterday, and now his contract is coming to an end in just 2 seasons.

  24. He’s not staying guys get yourself ready for it. This year he’s purposely trying to get a move to a Madrid /barca etc

  25. Operationtiger8 on

There’s so much time, remember when we all thought Szobo was gonna be benched this season? His agents are trying to take advantage of his recent form to see if they can get him a nice long term deal. Meanwhile our sporting department is likely waiting to see if his level has actually gone up or if it’s temporary – I love the guy but I do think our sporting department is run by intelligent individuals who have gotten unlucky and are making the right decisions with the available information.
