The small scrubland fire ignited on Sunday at midday on an island at Ornamental Lake.

Buckets of water were used by Redbridge firefighters to extinguish the blaze and dampen down the area.

Susan Hill took to the Daily Echo Hampshire Camera Club to share her pictures of the firefighters at work.

It showed crews filling buckets in the lake and carefully walking across a stick dam to reach the island.

She said: “The fire was still smouldering, so they used buckets of water to dampen it down, and the warden was using a pickaxe to dig down to make sure it had gone out completely.”

A spokesperson for the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Redbridge firefighters were called to The Common in Southampton at around midday yesterday after a small scrubland fire was spotted on the island of one of the lakes.

“Buckets of water were used to extinguish the fire and dampen down the area.

“The crew returned to station at around half 12. ”
