I think Tobyβs opinion is spot on. These defenders we have couldnβt tie Tobyβs or Janβs laces. We had Walker, Toby, Jan and Rose plus Lloris as our back 5. The difference in quality is that back 5 challenged for the league and the back 5 we have now is taking us into the Championship.
Toby speaking on the topic, and talking about Romero and VDV is gold. An actual high level, quality CB, telling two of the most over hyped CBs weve probably ever had (weve had far worse, just that these two are massively over hyped). I dont know if its the best thing for them to see going into a relegation battle (Romero doesnt matter, he wont be playing.) But its like Abraham Lincoln calling out Trump. Its gold.
Hard to know how much is the players and how much is the incoherent transfer strategy? Alderweireld was part of a team that was assembled over 5 years with a consistent vision in mind – every part fit and worked together. What you have now is a mish mash of bits from Joseβs, and Nunoβs, and Conteβs, and Angeβs, and Frankβs wish lists – bits from different jigsaws that donβt fit.
My guess is a lot of these players are genuinely not at the level, but I suspect an equal number have just become bitter and resentful at how their big moves have panned out and have mentally checked out. Thatβs probably the biggest problem De Zerbi has in the relegation scrap – working out who is committed, and who is just mailing it in, and trying to avoid injury so they can shop-window themselves at the World Cup.
When Romero attacked the board for not buying top players you all crucified himπ Toby didn't say this when he was playing for Spurs when we went almost 2 seasons not signing anyone. Romero deserves respect for having the balls to side with the fans
