Alpay Ozalan. Now an MP in Turkey apparently.
Alpay was weird for us. I always liked him and thought he was hard working, but the press REALLY turned on him after an England v turkey game (like borderline stringing him up) and then he was done.
I was only a young teenager when this happened so my memory might be mixed up
Alpay, was a pretty good defender for us when fit, formed a good partnership with Mellberg, a bit of a fan favourite. Was injured most of the 21-22 season, Villa did a lot of work helping him get fit for the World Cup. Thanked us by coming back after the World Cup and asking for a transfer. Was dropped to the reserves for a bit. Scored a goal against. Charlton I think, shushed the Holte End, can’t remember him playing much after that. Not long after this the incident with Beckham happened.
