As Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior tries to drag his side out of the rut they find themselves in, one of the club’s co-owners has issued a message for the young manager

Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali has unconvincingly said “I think we’re behind” Liam Rosenior and warned him it’s a result-based business. The Blues are currently stuck in a rut of torrid form, which has seen them lose their last three Premier League matches without scoring a goal.
Things could get worse before they get better, as they host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea have not recorded a Premier League victory since their 4-1 away win over Aston Villa, and are also winless in the league at the Bridge since January 31, when they beat relegation-threatened West Ham 3-2 in dramatic fashion, coming back from two goals down.
The Blues have also tumbled out of the top five and are edging further and further away from fifth placed Liverpool. While Eghbali claims Rosenior has their support for now, the head coach knows he cannot afford to keep losing games in the run-in.

Speaking at the CAA’s World Congress of Sports conference in Los Angeles on Thursday, in a rare public appearance, the BlueCo majority shareholder said: “On Liam [Rosenior], we had the opportunity to work with him daily for 18 plus months, so we knew what we were getting.
“We think he has every attribute to be successful here. He got off to a great start. We’ve had a tough past five, six matches, but I think we’re behind Liam.
“Of course, it’s a results business, but we think he can be successful long term.”

Since the consortium led by BlueCo and Clearlake Capital purchased the west Londoners, they have churned their way through managers. Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and, most recently, Enzo Maresca have either been sacked or departed the club mutually, while Frank Lampard also had a spell as interim manager after Potter’s dismissal.
Despite going through four permanent managers since 2022, Eghbali insists they want to bring stability to the club in the form of a long-term head coach. He added: “Our policy has been no in-season [head coach] changes.

“You certainly review and hold not only the manager, but the management team, the sporting team, accountable, but typically in the summers, not in season. It’s not a change we wanted to make [Enzo Maresca leaving]. It’s a change that had a bit of a negative impact in the season, when you’re changing systems and personnel, and it’s one we’ve got to fight our way out of.
“We still have six matches in the Premier League, and an FA Cup semi-final coming up. So, hopefully the story of this season hasn’t been written yet, and you’ve got a lot to fight for.
“In my perspective, when you get punched in the face, you’ve got to fight back, you’ve got to stand up and fight. And it’s going to hopefully show a lot about the character of this squad.

“I think the perspective is stability, and frankly, getting that stability on the manager side is one of the things we haven’t done right yet, and it’s something we’re striving to improve on.”
All is not lost for Rosenior and his players. They are still in the race for the top five and they also face Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final.
The clash against United this weekend is one of their most important of the campaign, particularly after being beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in the last Premier League game-week.
