I mean these are dying moments in a CL quarter final and Sporting got a relatively open chance to get a shot away, of course Gabriel is gonna be frustrated.
Yes, Dowman is 16 and will learn with time, but this is also part of the big tournament experience, if you are on the pitch some things are expected of you.
Obviously Dowman will learn from this, develop, he’s gonna be fine.

don’t quite remember this moment.
but from the clip, that doesn’t seem like Max’s fault? there is someone else to the right too

Don’t care how old you are if you’re in this team then you are just as accountable as everyone else. Can’t have different standards for different players

Wasn’t Max covering the player on the fat right who would have otherwise been left completely open with tons of space?

Difficult to see in this angle, but seems that was not his man. His man was more central.
There are 4 players marking 3 on the left side of the box. Feels like Havertz should be getting out to him.
Anyway it’s just anxiety from Gabi to not lose it in the last second. Nothing to read into here

Imagine being 16 and getting absolutely rollicked by GabiXL, i know i’d have shat myself

It’s not really his guy but at the same time it’s ok to be shouted at for things like this, it’s all learning process and this is how you communicate on the pitch. All the centre backs I’ve played with have always been the moaniest players on the pitch and everyone expects it, all they do is put out fires all game so everybody expects it at some point, it’s just who’s turn is it now.

For everyone asking the question as to why this was Max’s fault:
During the live broadcast you could see Gabi screaming at someone to fall in and come deeper to defend. I can only assume this was Max, who’s starting position was higher (perhaps to counter or to be touch tight to the man in their LW position). Max should have been starting a yard or two inside the box, to both react and clear anything that broke inside the box (in his area), as well as to be goal side to a second phase on the edge of the box. He’s 16, inexperienced, and had that gone in I would not be happy with how he applied himself to be nowhere near a block. Not everyone plays with the dedication and passion Gabi shows to defend us, but with the right attitude and guidance, Max will understand eventually and apply that too 🙂

That wasn’t Dowman’s man

he will learn from this if he want to be the best.
Good. So much of his experience this season has been character-building, rather than nurturing talent etc. These learning experiences are rare and utterly priceless. Play with the big boys and you get treated like one of the big boys.

I also noticed an angry Raya having a go at Zubi when he played the ball back instead of turning with it himself.

When things go wrong at that level, you can’t say, that’s not my position. It’s a question of, what’s the best team play/move for me to do.

That’s how Gabi is. He’ll hold you accountable to the same standards he sets. He’s a true defensive leader.
I remember some youth player saying that even in training, Gabi crunches into you like it’s a competitive match.

That is how Max is going to get even better.

I would probably say this also stemmed from frustration that 1) Raya could have held onto the ball for a bit and then distributed and 2) that he released it quickly only for Trossard to not go to the corner flag, lose the ball in terrible fashion and then us be under attack again

I shall report Gabriel to social services for this.

I love it. We want leaders on the pitch setting the standards – this is what it looks like!

Totally normal behavior and what should be expected. The bot is 16 and even with all the technical ability in the world he still lacks experience, game understanding, etc. He needs the more experienced and veterans of the team to correct him and help him reach his potential. It’s very good for his development that we have this kind of dressing room during this era.

Gabriel shouting for no reason, if that ball gets shifted over and Dowman gambles on the first one – everyone would slate him for it

That’s part of Max’s education. Just because he’s a kid doesn’t mean we have to accept lapses like that.
Better to drill that stuff into him now when he’s still learning the men’s game

There is no way that is Dowman’s player to mark, if he goes to him then the right side is entirely open.

I imagine big Gabi is starting to feel the pressure as he’s not been tip top recently, so he needs everyone else to step up

I fucking love Dowman (we all do), but I have to say, he shouldn’t be getting thrown on in the middle of a cement mixer CL quarterfinal when we’re clearly trying to scrape our way to the finish line. He’s just not that guy who’s going to dig in and close down the opposing team’s flank. Which is completely understandable given that he’s 16 yo!
