The plane left Southampton Airport on March 5 – 90 years to the day after a prototype Spitfire took to the skies of the first time.

Spitfires.com is marking the milestone with a circumnavigation of mainland Britain, culminating in a final flight on Friday, April 17.

The aircraft will leave Exeter at 10am, weather permitting, before heading east towards Southampton. For much of the flight it will be accompanied by aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The journey will end at Southampton Airport, where the prototype Spitfire first flew in 1936.

Other Spitfires played in key role in the Battle of Britain, Hitler’s attempt to crush the RAF and thus pave the way of a Nazi invasion of England.

The famous fighter plane was designed by R J Mitchell, who worked at the Vickers Supermarine factory in Woolston.
