Southampton

Southampton are keen on extending Cyle Larin’s stay at St Mary’s after this season.

The Championship side took the striker from RCD Mallorca in February on loan with a purchase option.

Two months ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain the La Liga side are hoping for Southampton to buy him in the summer. The same source stated the Spanish club want to offload him permanently in order to save on his high salary.

Mallorca invested €8m to sign him from Real Valladolid in August 2023 and he’s one of their top earners.

The Canada international spent the first half of this season on loan at Feyenoord. He scored a goal and contributed an assist from 401 minutes from 15 matches for the Dutch club.

In February, Mallorca cut shot his stay with the Eredivisie side and sent the 30-year-old on loan to Southampton. This move has worked out as he scored six goals and contributed one assist from 15 matches for the Saints.

His Championship stats are as follows:

Appearances: 12
Starts: 7
Total minutes: 638
Goals: 5
Assists: 1
Expected Goals: 4.06
Expected Assists: 0.51

Southampton’s plan for Canadian

Cadena Ser now cover Cyle Larin’s plans for his future and his chances of making it to the World Cup with the national team.

His career has taken a ‘180-degree turn’ since moving to Southampton in the winter market.

The frontman has no plans to return to RCD Mallorca and is unlikely to repair the fallout he had with their supporters. The Spanish club would also be favour of selling him in the summer.

Journalist Alberto Mora insists his form for Southampton should benefit Canada. He adds Tonda Eckert’s side, who have a €4m purchase option, will push to buy him after this season.

“Larin is one of Jesse Marsch’s favourites. There was a long talk between the coach and the player. There’s a change in attitude; he’s playing differently in Canada’s friendlies,” he said.

“He’s been more combative. He’s become their third-choice striker, especially after Promise David’s injury. It’s worth remembering that Larin is the national team’s all-time leading scorer.”

“He’s the same player he was at Beşiktaş, with a knack for scoring goals, a real fighter… He’s rediscovered that form at Southampton. We understand that the English club will make a real effort to sign him.”

Our take: Southampton shouldn’t have issues

Southampton want to buy Cyle Larin, who doesn’t want to return to RCD Mallorca. The latter are also open to a sale in the next window.

Taking these into account, the Saints shouldn’t find it difficult to buy the Canadian. Their position could only be made more firm if the English club return to the Premier League.

They are now fourth in the table, three points behind second placed Ipswich Town, who have a game in hand.
