[@markrstats] Under Carrick Man United opponents’ pass completion in build-up increased from 77.7% to 82.2%, while the number of dangerous possessions lost decreased from 24.3 to 19.6.
In other words, United’s high press efficiency fell from above to below league average

Am I dumb or does the conclusion not make sense?
Edit: oh yeah, I am dumb, so its opponents performance against us, not us doing it to the opponents. Makes sense now
You know what else changed?
We won more games.
It’s called lack of match fitness
Well yea. We spend a lot more time defending in a mid-block
Points per game 1.6 vs 2.1 is the only stat that matters
And Amorim is still the worst manager in the last 13 years.
Considering pressing was the only thing amorim did well, hardly surprising
It also doesn’t take into account that United have had two red cards in two matches hence can’t press much
This is the downside to giving players more agency and freedom on the pitch.
Results have changed a bit but degraded in attacking metrics.
But I’ve been saying forever, I’ll not judge a manager until I see a competent Midfield who can run and pass
I see people commenting ‘but we win more games now’. We won more games *2 months back*. After the initial bounce under Carrick where we won 4 in a row, our record in the next 7 games has been 3 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses: 11 points with 1.57 points per game.
Two thirds of Carrick’s interim spell has been the same type of results under Amorim, but in a different flavour that’s arguably less sustainable in the long-term. Turns out no manager is masking through the issues in the squad the way so many wanted to believe.
He can’t stay. Outside of the first two games we haven’t been good at all. Now its just catching up with us. I am can’t see us win any of the last 6 games convincingly
All I know is we’re in a better position now than we were under Amorim.
Poor performances of course, but I just need us to secure CL football then try and persuade Nagelsmann or someone of that level to join.
Part of this is due to Dorgu being injured and the drop off to Maz or Shaw being signifant at the fullback position – neither of them have the pace of Dalot/Dorgu and that has an impact.
Main problem seems to be we’ve been losing intensity game after game. The tactics are clearly suiting the player better but Carrick needs to work them harder off the field as well.
Didn’t get the memo? Are we turning against Carrick so quickly?
Absolutely unreal that there are still people here who would prefer we still had Amorim
I know it would be too difficult to do, but the best comparison would be taking the Afcon period out when we had a mini injury crisis including maguire and no Afcon players. Also removing the Bayindir, Onnana matches at the start.
Regardless, it’s clear that we sit in a deeper block and stop pressing high and now commit less players going forward.
They didnt play the same teams. And Carrick won more games. It wasn’t wrong to sack Amorim. The only think I take from this is be. Rey thorough on the permanent coach appointment and also, get a goddamn good midfield
We were 4 points ahead of 14th place Palace when Amorim got sacked.

He’s refused to play a high line so far which makes sense considering Maguire has been our best and most consistent CB since Carrick arrived.
But have we been playing a deep defence because Maguire has been our best CB or is Maguire our best CB because we play to his strengths
This is a broader tactical trend. Everyone is so good at playing through a press these days that teams have started mid blocking and only pressing under a more limited set of triggers. I’m sure there’s room for improvement but an overall number doesn’t tell us much.
My conclusion is that it is very clear that Amorim had to go, but that Carrick might not necessarily be the best choice for a permanent appointment.
I also think it’s very clear that our midfield doesn’t have enough quality. I think we need to have 2 starting CMs for our pivot, and have Mainoo as depth so he can grow. Something like Wharton and Anderson/Tonali/Onana would be an instant upgrade for us.
You can see the way it’s going. We’re training less, being less intensive, and we’re being slower on the pitch.
All well and good if this good vibes, less training, more freedom, gets us into the champions league – but it’s not good enough for united.
The bounce was great, results wise anyway. I hope no one has forgotten how poor the performances have been over the past few games though.
