Manchester United are in the market for midfield additions during the summer transfer window, and they are now targeting one star shortly after Rio Ferdinand said they need to do everything they can to sign him, according to Caught Offside.

It’s no secret that one of United’s major priorities in the summer market is going to be signing at least one new midfielder.

Casemiro has confirmed that he’s going to be departing upon the expiration of his contract, which expires later this year, while Manuel Ugarte has been linked with a departure from Old Trafford.

A large portion of United’s budget is likely going to be spent on signing a top-level midfielder, but they could also look to bring in a cheaper option alongside that.

The report claims that Real Madrid and Barcelona are among those monitoring Smit ahead of a possible move, while sides in the Premier League are also believed to be keen.

Smit has been described as ‘one of the most sought-after young talents’ ahead of the summer transfer window, and it looks set to be a competitive race to secure his signature.

One man who would approve of United bringing Smit to the club would be former defender Ferdinand.

The retired centre-back has urged United to make a move to secure his signature in the summer transfer window, suggesting that they can’t let him go elsewhere.

“Kees Smit is the truth man, I’m telling you. He’s one you go, ‘I’m buying him’. It doesn’t have to be for now. I hope he does come in and takes the world by storm, but if we’ve got to wait six months to a year for him, I do not care. We cannot let him go elsewhere. I’ve seen him play a couple of times now and that’s all I need to see. I’ve seen the clips… man. I’ve spoken to some guys in Holland, friends. The kid has got it.”

The 20-year-old described as ‘special’, has plenty of clubs pushing to sign him, but United need to try make it to the front of the queue.
