Newcastle United look set to cash in on one of their big-name players this summer – but have been warned that any more than a single sale could cause uproar on Tyneside.
Despite flattering financial figures released last week, which saw commercial revenue increase by 44% and a post-tax profit of £34.7million, Newcastle’s numbers are still tight as they look to meet the Premier League and UEFA regulations.
The club sold the St James’ Park leasehold to themselves more than a year ago to combat Profit and Sustainability concerns, but look set to have breached UEFA’s squad cost ratio rules, which will land them with a hefty fine.
Chief executive David Hopkinson admitted that in order to spend big this summer, big-name players may have to leave to fund more spending. However, any sales will only be sanctioned in the best interests of the club and on their terms.
A number of Newcastle players have been linked with summer exits, especially if the Magpies fail to qualify for Europe next season. They sit 12th in the table with seven games to go and a Conference League placing looks their best bet.
The likes of captain Bruno Guimaraes, midfielder Sandro Tonali, full-back duo Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall, and forward Anthony Gordon – the crown jewels of Newcastle’s side – have all seen speculation about their future. It is expected that one will leave this summer but Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith has warned the club they can’t afford to let more than just one leave.
“They wouldn’t want to sell any of the three being touted, Hall, Bruno and Tonali, would they really?” he told BestBettingSites. “But it’s such a difficult time for Newcastle come the end of this year. It’s been a lacklustre season.
“Tonali seems to be making the biggest noises, or at least his agent does. There’s a host of clubs that would want him. He’s 25. In his prime. Guimaraes is a little bit older, but a fantastic player. Lewis Hall, a young lad who’s really blossoming there.
“The Newcastle fans would be hurt. They’d be hurt by any of those three going. And if they were to sell two of the three, I mean, the fans would be in uproar, I think. So I think they’d only dare to sell one. Maybe Tonali.”

It comes as speculation over Tonali’s future, in particular, ramps up. Manchester United are believed to have made the Italian one of their priorities this summer and his agent has been making noises over the last few months about a potential transfer.
Livramento, meanwhile, only has two years left on his contract and has been admired by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
Football finance expert Stefan Borson believes United will have to cash in on one of their big-name players this summer, despite having sold Alexander Isak for a British record £125million back in August.
“There are signs that Newcastle will have to sell somebody if they want to invest more, given what they announced about the stadium sale,” Borson told Football Insider. “With European financial fair play, I would expect both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest to fail the UEFA football earnings test and probably also the squad cost ratios for the current season.
“We’ve known about that for a while, but certainly Newcastle have confirmed it in terms of their position, so they are currently in conversation with UEFA regarding a settlement. I would expect the situation with Nottingham Forest to be the same, so there’s strong reason for both of them to want to sell a player.”
