Several media outlets have taken an interest in the comments made by Ivan Toney after the match, as his remarks have sparked widespread reactions within the sporting community.

Several journalists therefore called on the Referees’ Committee of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation to review and transcribe the conversations that took place between the match official and the players, in order to verify the accuracy of Tony’s allegations and to determine whether the refereeing team did indeed make the remarks to which the player referred.

Media personality Wael Al-Najjar stressed that Tony’s remarks demand swift, decisive action from the game’s governing bodies, and he called for an urgent, transparent investigation into the incident.

He stressed that a swift official statement, backed by concrete evidence, is essential to clarify the facts for fans and settle the dispute.

Sports journalist Eid Al-Thaqil went further, describing Tony’s allegations about the Al-Fayha match as a “genuine disaster” for competitive integrity, and warned that if proven true, such claims could erode public trust in the league.

Al-Thaqil stressed that, if the referee did indeed make the remarks attributed to him, the incident must be neutralised and proper sanctions applied. Should the allegations prove false, the Disciplinary Committee must act swiftly to sanction the player and protect the integrity of the competition. Both commentators stressed that a prompt, transparent investigation is the only way to preserve public trust in the league and to ensure that matches are decided on the pitch, not in the referee’s room. They warned that any delay would fuel further speculation and erode the reputation of Saudi football domestically and abroad. Fans and stakeholders now await an official statement from the league organisers, who have so far remained silent on the matter. The outcome of any probe, they agreed, must be communicated openly to reassure supporters that fairness and accountability remain core values of the sport.
