Cooper Rushen starred with a sensational paid maximum from his four rides, as Poole won the first ten heats, with nine of them heat advantages, including four 5-1s.

Only Scorpions skipper Josh Pickering seemed able to trouble the hosts on the night, with 12 points from his five rides.

But it was a crushing victory for the Pirates at Wimborne Road, and they will be firmly in control to reach the quarterfinals of the competition on Friday when they travel to Scunthorpe for the second leg.

The Pirates made a good start to the night and their cup defence as Richard Lawson gated and took the victory in heat one.

Behind him, Kyle Newman couldn’t get past Scorpions skipper Pickering despite a good look up the inside into lap two, but he finished in third for a Poole 4-2 heat advantage.

Rushen claimed his first heat win in Pirates colours as he found some speed around the outside of the first bend and passed Simon Lambert, and the 16-year-old went clear for the victory.

Will Cairns crossed in third behind Lambert for another 4-2 to the hosts.

Pirates gated on a 5-1 in heat three, but Fraser Bowes appeared to be struggling in the first bend of the second lap and he was overtaken by Connor Mountain, before the Australian fell in bend three.

Lewis Kerr took a comfortable win ahead of the Scorpions pair as the points were shared.

But the Poole faithful did not need to wait for long before their side delivered the first maximum of the evening.

Zach Cook got out the gate well ahead of Rushen and the youngster held off Michael Palm Toft for a Pirates one-two.

The home side were again on for a maximum in heat five but Scunthorpe number one Pickering manged to pick off Kerr for second, but he couldn’t deny Bowes out front and another 4-2 went the way of Poole.

Pirates’ strong start was hammered home in heat six.

It looked like Lawson may struggle to get to the start when his chain shed on the line, but he ran back to the pits, hopped on Cook’s bike and just made it to tapes.

That stress made no difference to the Rocketman as he soared to the heat victory ahead of Lambert, as Newman passed the Scorpions reserve for second place and a second 5-1 on the night for Pirates.

Cook won his second heat of the night in heat seven ahead of Mountain and Cairns for yet another heat advantage for the Pirates, extending the lead to 29-13.

Heat eight was stopped when Nathan Ablitt slid out on bend three of the first lap, with Newman out front and Rushen at the back when he went down, with the Scorpion excluded from the re-run.

While Lambert initially got ahead of Rushen, the 16-year-old came around the outside onto the back straight to take second and he held position behind Newman for a 5-1, despite Lambert’s best efforts.

Pirates Kerr and Bowes gated in heat nine and went to a comfortable maximum and the Pirates dominance continued in heat 10.

Lawson took his third win of the meeting with Newman defending well from Luke Harrison and he kept third and secured another 4-2 for the home side.

Scunthorpe recorded their first heat win and advantage of the night in heat 11 as Pickering passed Cook for the lead and Ablitt held off Cairns for third.

Kerr and Rushen got out the gate well in heat 12 and they soared to a one-two and with that, a paid maximum for the 16-year-old from his four rides.

Pickering flew out of the gate in heat 13 and kept Cook and Lawson behind him for a 3-3.

The Scunthorpe pair gated in heat 14 but both Bowes and Cairns were able to pass Lambert, before the Scorpions reserve fell on bend three and the heat was stopped.

He was excluded from the re-run as the cause of the stoppage and Bowes hit the front out the start for his second win of the night, as Mountain managed to hold off the charging Cairns for a Pirates 4-2.

Cook and Pickering both started well in the final heat but the Pirates got around the outside of the Scorpion in the first bend to take the lead and eventually the heat.

Kerr couldn’t trouble the Scorpions number one for second, although he was closing at the end, but it was another 4-2 heat advantage for the Pirates to round out a dominant night for Poole.

They will head to Scunthorpe on Friday with a 32-point lead to defend after a 61-29 victory in the first leg of the preliminary round of the KO Cup.
