Staff at the Holiday Inn Southampton Eastleigh raised £760 for Pancreatic Cancer UK by completing the Eastleigh 10K, with one team member now set to double the distance.

James Mahaffey, 47, of Fareham, will tackle the Southampton Half Marathon on May 3, to raise even more funds and awareness for the charity.

He said: “The Eastleigh 10K was a real team effort and something we’re all incredibly proud of.

“To raise £760 together shows what can be achieved when people get behind a cause that really matters.

“For me, taking on the Southampton Half Marathon is about building on that momentum.

“It’s twice the distance, so definitely a bigger challenge, but it feels important to keep pushing and do what we can to support Pancreatic Cancer UK.

“Hearing how this disease impacts families close to us really puts things into perspective.

“If we can help raise awareness, fund research and support people going through it, then every mile is worth it.”

The fundraising drive was inspired by the loss of a colleague’s father to pancreatic cancer, and four members of the hotel team took part in the Eastleigh 10K, backed by colleagues across the business.

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer, with half of patients dying within three months of diagnosis.

Survival rates have barely improved in 50 years, and most patients are diagnosed too late for lifesaving treatment.

Kerry Thomas, head of public fundraising at Pancreatic Cancer UK, said: “We are incredibly grateful that James is supporting us and we would like to wish him the very best of luck.

“The funds raised will help us offer support to people diagnosed and their loved ones, invest in research to move us closer to the breakthroughs we urgently need, and be a voice for everyone affected by the deadliest common cancer.”

To support Mr Mahaffey and the team, donations can be made on JustGiving.
