Patrick Dorgu’s injury in January brought an end to his short-lived role as Manchester United’s most deadly attacking player.

After Michael Carrick’s arrival, Patrick Dorgu had two goals in two games, earning comparisons with Gareth Bale for his conversion from left-back to goal-scoring winger.

But this run ended when Dorgu was injured against Arsenal, ruling him out for the past two months, and his impact has been missed by Carrick.

Now, Dorgu is nearing a return for United, but who should drop out to facilitate the Dane back in the starting line-up?

Does he get back into the starting team immediately?

Dorgu was so impressive from the left wing, offering width and balance for United, resulting in free-flowing football and goals.

This has all been less frequent without Dorgu on the left wing, and so when he is back and ready to play, the 21-year-old needs to start.

But he can’t start without someone dropping out of the team, and there are options for United, with each having different impacts.

There is one clear option that is most likely.

Matheus Cunha drops out

Probably the most likely option would be Matheus Cunha dropping to the bench to allow Dorgu to come in with Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko rounding out the front three.

Cunha has been good for United this season, but on the left, he doesn’t offer the width needed for the attack to be balanced.

Dorgu is the only senior player who will hold width on the left, and with Luke Shaw struggling to get up the pitch and overlap this season, the team needs a left-footer on the wing.

Cunha, on the left, tends to drop inside and occupy the same spaces as Bruno Fernandes. The Brazilian could be an option up front, with Carlo Ancelotti choosing Cunha as his striker for Brazil, but United need something else.

Dorgu’s return will be welcome news for Benjamin Sesko, with the Slovenian dying for a winger to get down the left and cross the ball.

At 6ft 5in, Sesko is frustratingly underutilised by United, with a lack of crosses into him, which is an impact of the wingers being more goal scorers than creators.

But Dorgu and Sesko linked up for a goal against Burnley, which demonstrated exactly why he should be starting for United when fit.

Sesko has been shining with fairly limited service, but with a winger who will look to find him in the box, the goals could start flowing.
