Stokewood Vets in Bournemouth has warned that rising pollen levels can trigger allergic reactions in dogs, though the symptoms can look different from those in humans.

The most common sign is itchy skin.

Other behaviours such as excessive scratching, nibbling at their paws, rubbing their face on carpets, and the appearance of red, flaky areas may also indicate a pollen allergy.

Maddie Plugaru, practice director at Stokewood Vets, said: “Spring should be a fun season for our pets, not an itchy one.

“While dogs don’t show hay fever in the same way that we do, those little signs like nibbling paws or scratching can tell us a lot.

“The sooner we spot it, the sooner we can help them feel comfortable again.”

She also advised caution around over-the-counter treatments.

Ms Plugaru said: “You should always seek advice from your vet before giving your dog medication such as antihistamines, as some are toxic to dogs.”

Suggestions for easing symptoms include walking dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when pollen levels are lower, rinsing their fur after outdoor walks, and washing bedding frequently.

Owners concerned about their pet’s health are encouraged to contact Stokewood Vets for advice.
