After years of difficult nights against Chelsea, Lionel Messi walked into the Camp Nou in 2018 with unfinished business. The first leg at Stamford Bridge had already seen him finally break his scoring drought against Chelsea, but in Barcelona he took complete control of the tie. From the opening seconds, his movement between the lines caused problems Chelsea never really solved.

The first goal came almost immediately. Messi spotted the gap at Thibaut Courtois’ near post and struck through it before Chelsea had even settled into the game. It was one of those finishes that looked simple only because of how quickly he saw it. Chelsea tried to respond, but every time they pushed forward Messi punished the space they left behind.

He was at the heart of everything. One run through midfield carved Chelsea open and ended with a perfectly weighted pass for Ousmane Dembélé to score. Later, Messi added his second of the night, once again beating Courtois through the legs, a detail that quickly became the talking point of the game. By the final whistle, Barcelona had won 3–0, and Messi had completely decided the tie with two goals and an assist.
