Manchester United aim to clear at least £1.2m a week from their wage bill to make space for new signings this summer.
Casemiro’s exit at the end of the season has already been confirmed and winger Jadon Sancho is also expected to depart once his contract expires in June.
Forwards Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund, who are on loan at Barcelona and Napoli respectively, could leave permanently and United will also seek a buyer for goalkeeper Andre Onana, currently on loan at Trabzonspor in Turkey.
United, who are third in the Premier League table with seven games to play, are on course to qualify for the Champions League, which would trigger a 25 per cent increase in the majority of players’ salaries next season.
Those pay rises, coupled with the need to strengthen in a number of key positions, not least in central midfield, place great importance on United moving players on to improve room for financial manoeuvre.
Another financial consideration is that around £190m of the club’s existing net transfer debt, relating to past deals, is due for payment this year.
Casemiro, Rashford, Sancho, Hojlund and Onana’s wages account for more than £62m annually in Champions League seasons so their departures would free up a substantial amount of money – and necessarily so.
Much of that will be swallowed up by the need for a bigger, better-quality squad next season, to cope with domestic and European football, after this current campaign in which United will play just 40 matches, their fewest in a full season for 111 years.

Barcelona have an option to sign Rashford permanently for €30m (about £26.2m) as part of his current loan arrangement. The England forward will still have two years remaining on his £325,000-a-week contract with United this summer.
Napoli will have an obligation to buy Hojlund for €44m (£38.4m) should the Italian club qualify for the Champions League this season. They are currently third in Serie A, with the top four enough to secure a spot in next season’s tournament.
Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna said in December that signing Hojlund permanently would be a “formality” and last month insisted the Denmark striker “will stay” in Naples. Hojlund has scored 14 goals in 37 games for Napoli this season.
A greater degree of uncertainty surrounds Onana, who has played 24 games for Trabzonspor since joining the Turkish club on loan in September.
Ertugrul Dogan, the Trabzonspor president, has previously cast doubt on their ability to sign the Cameroon goalkeeper permanently given the wages and transfer fee that would be involved.
Meanwhile, United have announced they will play Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12 as part of their pre-season preparations.

Although we haven’t been paying the wages of 4/5 of those this year (or at most it was a fraction).

Banking on Rashford, Onana and Hojlund being off the wage books. I won’t believe it until they’re officially out of the door and not another loan with option to buy nonsense

Yeah, confirmed that Onana is leaving. I know it has been many a times by Laurie and by Romano before but it feels nice everytime I get a confirmation through hints that Onana isn’t coming back.
