❌At this point it’s become a habit, I’m really pissed off about the terrible situation our national team is in.
We played really badly in a match that was crucial for our future, and I think Gattuso made a lot of mistakes too, there are some decisions I really didn’t understand.
👀Why take off Kean at the 60th minute to bring on Pio Esposito? That left Gattuso with literally zero attacking options on the bench, and we had to play the whole game with Esposito as a lone striker, a player who actually performs better alongside another forward.
😐Three defensive center-backs on the pitch, with Bastoni adapted to the middle… what’s the point of that? Bastoni played badly and got sent off, but what’s the point of using him centrally when he’s much better as a side center-back?
🇧🇦There’s not even anything to complain about regarding the referee, since Bosnia fully deserved to win, they gave everything and played a great match.
Well, we’ll have to wait AT LEAST another 4 years to see Italy at the World Cup, and that’s what hurts the most.

I actually wonder about Bastoni. A few years back I thought he was a defender on the cusp of becoming world class. And I was pleased, that although it was for a rival club, that Italy had a CB of such potential.
But seeing him play comparatively quite poorly in a 4 man defence, and now in the middle of a 3 man defence, confuses me, and I no longer know.
Yes, his best position is on the left of a 3 man defence, but moving to the middle, or playing in a centre back pairing shouldn’t lead to such a drop in quality. It never affected Nesta/Cannavaro/Maldini/Costacurta, Chiellini etc. And even Bonucci was good in a centre back pairing (for a while).
By right, Bastoni should be good enough that it doesn’t matter. I mean, Chiellini has played in the middle of a 3 man CB and his passing ability pales in comparison to Bastoni, but there wasn’t a difference in defensive quality. Not like this.
I don’t believe that football positions have become so specialised that there is such a marked difference between the CB roles.
So I’m confused by Bastoni.
