Pep Guardiola has informed Manchester City of his intention to step down as manager at the end of the season.
Sources with knowledge of the situation say the decision has been communicated internally in recent weeks, with Guardiola understood to be planning a break from management following the conclusion of the campaign.
The timing of his departure is not linked to any single factor, but is instead described as a personal decision after an extended period in the role. Guardiola, who has overseen a sustained period of success at City, remains focused on the remainder of the season.
City have begun initial contingency planning, although a formal process to appoint a successor has not yet been finalised. Xabi Alonso is among the names under consideration, having attracted widespread interest following his work in Germany, while Enzo Maresca — who previously worked within City’s coaching structure — is also viewed as a potential candidate.
No approach has been made at this stage, but both profiles are understood to be of interest as City assess possible options.
Guardiola is contracted until 2025 and has previously spoken about the importance of taking breaks between managerial roles. The club are understood to respect his decision, with planning now underway to ensure continuity ahead of next season.
