  1. Not overly surprising imo, feel like Hopkinson was bought in specifically with the goal of working well with Eddie.

I expect things will improve next year with (probably) no Europe, but then if we get Champions/Europa again will we just see the same again?

“I don’t have a stance on his future,” he said. “What I can tell you is that the derby loss hurt.

“We take it seriously. There’s nothing within us that thinks, ‘Well, it’s just three points and on we go’. It has resonated.

“I spent a couple of hours in a one-on-one lunch recently with Eddie and we talked through a multitude of things, including that.

“Eddie is our manager. I expect to have a great run to the end of the season here and we will talk about the future when it’s time.

“Right now, we’re focused on this season’s competition.”

Sounds like the end of the Eddie era in the summer. I just hope to god they have someone good lined up if so, because there is zero sense otherwise.

  4. There’s perhaps a recognition that the events of the last few weeks are, at least in part, a cumulative effect of an unwillingness to invest in the first team squad across 4 or 5 consecutive windows and the instability at the top of the club caused by the revolving door of sporting directors and Darren Eales’ unfortunate illness. David Hopkinson has made a lot of noise recently about challenging the world’s elite – now he needs to put the club’s money where its mouth is.

This summer represents Eddie Howe’s last chance for a no-excuses transfer window. The top team is in place, having had the best part of a year together to plan and now execute the surgery this squad so badly needs. We’re told there is money to spend, and we expect to raise even more through the likely sales of Livramento and Tonali.

We need to see the club acting quickly and making moves early in the window. If we don’t, then this disquiet in the fan base is going to be overwhelming come early August, and Howe won’t make it past the first international break.

    No excuses Eddie, players,.

  6. I kind of respect Hopkinson’s honesty for saying that publicly, instead of pretending everything’s hunky dory after the Sunderland game.

  7. Hmm. Sounds like they’re seriously thinking about a change then. I’m very surprised.

  8. That’s hardly the strongest backing of the manager.

Seems, under the surface, there’s quite a bit of unhappiness with how Howe has managed this season

What I take from that is if we don’t go on a good run of form to end the season out then he’s gone. Personally I hope he does turn it around but he needs to do a lot to convince both us fans and the club after losing both derby games.

Any sort of Europe then Howe stays which is fair enough but if we don’t get Europe he’s 100% gone.

  11. Interesting comments. Not too firm on Eddie could just be PR to quiet down shouting around Eddie’s future to the fans who want him out.

But also, Changing manager in the summer also makes it easier to rip up the squad as it can all be done under the lens of new manager new players, fresh go at it.

  12. Who was the source then immediately after the derby briefing everyone he was fine and was getting backed (again) in the summer? That’s quite damning from the CEO to have that quote public.. 7 games to save his job it sounds like!

This season was always going to be a tough one with how the summer/pre season went.

He has credit in the bank with me for all he has done, but I would give him the first 10-12 games of 26/27 following hopefully a well planned summer and see how we are shaping up.

Reality is there is not a plethora of talent out there, so who would we get? A dream would be Pochettino post World Cup but I’d imagine it’d be someone much less prestige if no Europe.

Makes zero sense to get rid of a manager in the summer. Would be the 3rd summer in a row ruined by board/hierarchy changes. If he’s going go now and get whatever manager it is in place so the transfers can happen at the proper speed.

  15. This is all football talk for “we’re looking for his replacement”. Basically the new vote of confidence.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s been given a target of 57+ points. Don’t reach that and he’s gone.

It does feel quite reasonable to say that Eddie is on trial till the end of the season and that would be fair enough in my opinion

The excuses of too many games and not enough training time are gone as well as players coming back from injury

If we still roll out with the 433 and nothing changes tactically and we just play the same dogshit football while looking out of ideas on the touchline then hes got to go

The club though behind the scenes should be planning for what players we need doesn’t really matter what manager is in we need a new keeper, no6, no 10 to start with with other positions decided by which players are sold

Also if we are looking for a new manager I hope we aren’t then waiting till the end of the season before approaching anyone have the replacement ready to go in the background if that’s the plan

But if we decide to keep Eddie which can also happen then make sure hes given the tools to work with from the start of pre season as much as possible

  17. About time. It’s not healthy to be too comfortable in a position like that. Hopefully this will spur Howe on

It’s strange isn’t it? I truly did not expected Eddie to have done as well as he did till this season. The guy has become a victim of his own success. It’s like when you put a shit ton of effort in at work, then that becomes the baseline for which your boss will judge you but you just can’t keep it up forever.

Probably better to make a decision in the summer than right now. The manager market isn’t particularly great right now either.

If we go on a run and get say Europa League, then I am convinced this is the worst standard the Prem has been in for a good few years.

It would be funny though with our neighbours getting giddy early on in the season thinking they could finally get Europe after 53 years, with us pipping them to it after losing to them twice and being genuinely crap for most of the season. Although they’d find a way to spin it as per.

  20. Said with all the positivity you would associate with someone who, having just been alerted to toilet paper stuck to the sole of their shoe after visiting the bog, says they will take a look at it later.

soi bored of media in general. Didn’t we get told just last week that he’s definitely staying to the end of the season at least?
