5k Your Way officially began on Saturday morning at Southampton Common, joining more than 120 locations across the UK.

The scheme encourages people living with or having survived cancer, as well as their families, friends and healthcare professionals, to take part in gentle exercise and build a sense of community.

Among those who took part is Craig Thorn, 47, who says running played a crucial role in his recovery after being diagnosed with stage four testicular cancer.

He said: “Every person running is different and has a unique journey – I have been running for about six years now so for me I come every week and every mile counts whether walking or running.

“When I first started to run I could only do about 200 metres before I would have to stop and walk. It’s just about putting one foot in front of the other and keeping going.”

He continued: “I have now run as far as a half marathon – the reason I took up running was because I wanted to improve my fitness after being diagnosed with stage 4 testicular cancer.

“I see all shapes, sizes, abilities and ages at a parkrun like this which is what’s brilliant about it. Just getting out and being together is incredible.”

Organisers hope the launch of the 5K Your Way will help more people in Southampton access support, stay active and feel less alone.

Regular participant Michael Thomas, 70, who is preparing for his 181st parkrun, also highlighted the importance of community.

He said: “For those running for the first time my advice would be to start near the back and take it easy.

“I fell over and banged my head leaving me with a bleed on the brain around four months back – I was in hospital for two weeks.

“It took me some time to get back into my running and I walked the parkrun the first week, then jogged the second and so on.

“I think when you start it’s a race but at the end it becomes a run and the time is not that relevant – for me it’s all about the community spirit.

“I have made so many new friends just chatting with people while I’m running.”
