Women’s Super League champion Chelsea looks unlikely to win a seventh straight title but has to beat Aston Villa on Sunday in order to keep the dream alive. The Blues were nine points off the pace being set by leader Manchester City coming into Week 19, and cannot afford to drop any more results.
Even with a home win at Kingsmeadow this weekend, the defense is effectively over, given Chelsea’s missteps earlier in the campaign. An uncharacteristic run of errors around the Christmas period, combined with several losses to the likes of City and Arsenal, meant Sonia Bompastor’s side were always liable to be limited in their title prospects.
Villa, meanwhile, is playing largely for pride at this point, having all but guaranteed relegation, which is no longer a possibility this term. On the other hand, however, Natalia Arroyo’s outfit cannot finish any higher than fifth after falling 15 points off the pace being set by the Gunners.
Without exaggerating the one-sided nature of this rivalry, Chelsea have been absolutely dominant in this fixture over the years, winning all 11 of their WSL encounters. In that time, the Blues have scored 28 times and conceded just two, painting a poor picture of what to expect from a Villa perspective this weekend.
