The protest, organised by Bournemouth Patriots, is due to take place by the Sandbanks Ferry in Poole on Sunday, March 29, at 12pm.

In a Facebook post on the Poole Community group, organisers said the reason for the protest is to show community backing for the affected employees.

The Sandbanks Ferry announced it would be going completely cashless and will no longer accept cash as a form of payment from April 1.

In addition, automated toll systems will also be introduced later in the year.

Since the announcement, debate has sparked online about the jobs of those who work on the toll booths and the future of their job roles.

In a later statement to the Bournemouth Echo, Mike Kean, chairman of the Sandbanks Ferry Company, said:

“The adoption of efficiency measures is vital to ensure the long-term future of the ferry service.

“Automated tolling processes allow for significant efficiencies for the ferry operation, including helping to minimise traffic queues, but regrettably could result in the need for a small number of redundancies for those in specific toll-related roles.”

The Bournemouth Patriots group are encouraging residents to join the demonstration in a ‘peaceful’ manner.
