Probably the most insightful bit of punditry I've ever heard from Danny Murphy, he really nails the issue for Howe going forward.
I love Eddie and I'm happy for us to keep him, but he must learn how to rotate, rest and adapt tactics in seasons with european football.

Agreed. You’re going to get downvotes from the Howe first, Newcastle second Supporters on here, because it doesn’t align with their agenda.
We have tried to rest, rotate and adapt.
The problem is squad depth, we lost Tino to injury, so Tripps has to play every game, we lost Schar and Botman, so Burn and Thiaw can’t get a rest, we lost Bruno and Miley, that forced Woltemade into the CM rotation, because Willock isn’t good enough.
Tactically, we have adapted when we can, but our “big game” system is 5 atb, which was taken away by injuries at CB.
We need to get some better depth his summer, and get Wissa and Woltemade integrated into the side.
I want Howe out he is just not good enough! From playing his favourites to playing a winger up front. I hope that Nick shows Howe up by banging goals in for Germany. This is Newcastle United FC not Eddie Howe FC. Thanks for the cup but it is time for Eddie to move on.
Fair play, actual good analysis.
Its the lack of control which drives me nuts. We go so long in games with absolutely no one in control of the ball. As soon as theres a transition, everyone runs forward, passes are mis placed. players are stretching to control the ball with a bad touch, relying on way too many cute flicks that dont work 9/10 times. So then we lose the ball again within 10 seconds.
Also its a problem when the opp. breaks at us. Either Burn or Thiaw try and step into their half to make a challege, get played around and leave a frantic 2 on 3, or 3 on 2, depending where the full backs are. Tonali is usually the only midfielder sprinting back, but is too gassed and small to put up much of a challenge in the box.
have seen it over and over again this season
The signings have let us down? What about the players who were with us last season who have also underperformed. What about the injuries we’ve had.
Some of what he says is true and we do try to stick to our identity with energetic pressing at home. But other times it’s just been really poor concentration errors or set piece marking that have cost us. We should have at least 4 more points on the table with two wins against Tottenham and Chelsea at home where we were definitely the better team but failed to get the 3 points. For me, it wasn’t so much on Howe that we didn’t win because we did everything to be victorious but individual errors and a lack of mentality it seemed cost us.
We are trying lots of different things and admittedly our ability to control games with the ball to take the sting out of matches is something we are not good at. Can Howe coach this? I’m not sure, it’s not a very English style of play. But with the way we won at Chelsea, it looked like that togetherness and focus was back so let’s see how the rest of the season goes then make decision with one game a week upcoming.
I liked the way so many of the analysts come up with a good analysis of this. Another one of them is Adam clergy football channel too. The blame is on different sides. Personally it doesn’t look like the end of the world to me. Fans are frustrated and that’s understandable but some are absolutely clueless, I don’t wanna hear punditry from that second set of fans
Haven’t heard Danny outside of MOTD, nice analysis.
Tend to agree with him and why I’m just discontent rather than Howe out. I think we’d be in for a shock when we saw players asking out and how bang average we’d be under a new coach. Bye bye top 4 aspirations.
Howe hasn’t been able to adapt successfully this season and he needs to be better, but overall it’s not been an awful season, just underwhelming. Losing the derby twice, at possibly the worst moments of the season, has not helped at all either.
We made the last 16 of the Champions League, had decent runs in the cups and despite the yo yo nature of the PL season we still have a decent shot at European qualification if we get our act together. With the extended break hopefully the non international can get a decent break, reset and start strong in the run in. Guys like Willock and Murphy who have looked rusty need to use the time to compete as the 11th man in the team. Wolt can showcase once again why he should be starting every game up top for us and some of the internationals can get a break from the depression surrounding us and bring a bit of confidence back into camp.
This final stretch will test whether we have leaders in the squad or whether this will be the year we lose a few players and set up financially longer term to push again at a later date.
