Preliminary work is taking place in the £900K overhaul to Arras Square with contractors being appointed and final details being worked out before the redevelopment can start.
Arras Square lies between St Stephen’s Church and the Buttermarket in the town centre, with the work to refurbish the area being one of the long-term goals of the Town Funds deal.

An architect has been selected to develop the technical design which aims to celebrate the character of the square.
This will include retaining, as well as planting, new trees; thoughtful landscaping, sensitive lighting, brand new CCTV, high‑quality seating, improved pathways and upgraded cycle facilities.
Cllr Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “Ipswich Borough Council is moving forward with an exciting transformation of several key public realm areas, with Arras Square at the heart of the improvements, to create a more vibrant, welcoming and better‑connected town centre.”
There will also be new features that highlight Ipswich’s connection with Arras, northern France.
