[Sam Wallace] Why Liverpool agreed to let Mohamed Salah leave for free (With player disillusioned with life at club and relationship with manager, owners decided a parting of ways was best option)
[Sam Wallace] Why Liverpool agreed to let Mohamed Salah leave for free (With player disillusioned with life at club and relationship with manager, owners decided a parting of ways was best option)
Salah went public with his misgivings in Dec, since then both parties have been looking for a way out of the 2-year contract. At 33, Salah did not get the interest he might have wanted in Jan. Saudi remains the front-runner, Salah likes the USA + small chance he may stay in Europe (Italy)

Choosing to back Slot over Salah is an absolutely baffling decision. He’s only 33 and could adapt his game to rely less on his pace.
If he goes somewhere else in England or Europe and plays great again I’ll be fuming

People will spit feathers as though this is the club backing Slot over Salah, but I absolutely expected both to leave this summer and still do.
Neither realistically have a fruitful future at the club. The football is leaving Salah and Slot has shown he can’t deal with the tactical adjustments of the league.
Let’s please just enjoy Salah’s final months and try and win a trophy or two without drawing distracting and pointless battle lines.

So….mutual termination of his contract

This was 100% an ownership decision. Anyone who thinks edwards would have let Mo go for free without getting SOMETHING is clueless. He somehow got 10m for Trent.
Which makes me really think Edwards/Hughes time might be finished here

Inflammatory, really.
We knew Salah was pissed off with Slot. We all are.
This is worded to imply the owners chose Slot over Salah. Not the case, Slot is gone like a fart in the wind come summer.
This is a case of Salah being old and it being a good time for him to go, while the fans still adore him and he’s not relegated to a sad side-show.

Confirmation slot staying.

What he said in that December interview sounds less and less crazy as time goes on.

Just wild if it’s a problem of the manager, and they’re planing to replace slot this summer that they’d let him go for free
AstronomerNo2339 on
I think this is JH stepping in and doing right by a club legend. Slot harmed Mo in a grave manner and Mo doesn’t want to stay in the place he was disrespected and hurt even when Slot will be gone. I think Mo wants to be free to go wherever he’d like to go to finish his career and I think JH made it happen.

I mean the club are probably chuffed. The only clubs that would buy a diminished Salah with one year left on his contract are Saudi clubs. However with the turmoil in the region I doubt it’s an option.
So the club save around £20m in wages by letting him go free in the summer.

The best game Salah has played all season was vs Galatasaray at Anfield
& a formation change (with him playing closer to goal in a 4-4-2 diamond)
Granted Galatasaray weren’t the best opponents
But at least he was 25 yards nearer to goal & had pace in the outside (Frimpong) to occupy their fullback
& Wirtz & Macca to pass the through balls
He’s going now, but they should have sold him in January
To wherever – get that huge amount of money they call a yearly salary back (£22m p/y)
The club had to evolve
Clear the decks for a new manager
Or a fresh start for Slot in his 3rd season
The club needs much better depth of quality
2x CB (Konate to leave) on top of Jacquet & Leoni (personally Inacio & van de Ven would be ideal for pace, technique & adaptability)
That keeps 5 with Virgil
Gomez to leave
2x midfielders who are physically capable & have off the ball tactical knowledge (Gourna Douath & Camavinga would be ideal)
Two wingers (Gakpo to leave)
* Nico Williams & Olise ??
Kees Smit would a great purchase
Angelo Stiller another strong player to uplift the squad quality
Sell Alisson (brilliant but always injured)
And basically play Isak, Wirtz & Ekitike in the same 5 asides every day/week
They need to create telepathic relationships for the good of the club
Backing or not, might set a tough precedent for future players wanting to leave.

Mo was amazing and has giving us a lot, but is best years are already over and he is on 400K/ week.
It’s sad to be this way, but it’s football, let’s enjoy this last couple of games and give him a proper goodbye

Whatever it is. I do feel Salah genuinely loves the club and us.

I just beg that when he inevitably goes to Turkey or something and looks like Prime Salah again, we dont all lose our minds that we should have given another 10 yrs or something.
We know hes gonna be insanely good in a league like that.
It’s super sad to see him go but the time is right and his send off at the end of rhe season will hopefully be incredible

We surely could’ve got even 20 mil from Saudi, which would have come in handy when we don’t get UCL football.

What really baffles me, and its just my opinion I suppose, is that if they are okay with letting this season flounder and miss champions league then why not sell him last summer for the massive sum to help fund the club’s transfers? It seems to me there is a real lack of forethought going into the development of the club.
Either this season truly matters, and we should have bought Guehi, made moves in Jan and sacked Slot. OR the season really is a write off, we can miss Champions league, which then you should have sold Salah in the summer for a huge sum of money, which one is it?
Seems illogical to refuse to sell him, let Slot miss out on Champions league and bring in hundreds of millions of new signings. Club caught in the middle if you ask me.

He forced a move last year clearly, could have sold him for millions to saudi but guess he didnt want that.

Why is it on a free if he has another year on his contract wouldn’t it just be a reduced tranfer

Valid reasons but I still can’t get my head around the decision to let him go for free. Any of the likely destinations would have been more than happy to pay £30m+ for him.

Even without the public fallout, Mo would likely have been let go for some fee with the season he’s had. I’m glad the club agreed to let him go for free.

I actually feel it’ll be USA over Saudi. Better lifestyle plus Salah has mentioned he loves colder temps

> He and his long-term agent Ramy Abbas are not in any doubt that Salah should remain first choice, and once that no longer became the view of Slot then a collision was inevitable. **There was no possibility of Salah staying if he was not a starting XI player**.
Not sure how I feel about this. Of course all top players have an ego but I’ve never liked players who don’t accept being benched.
