Police are searching for William Campbell, who is wanted on recall to prison, where he had been serving a sentence for robbery.
Officers believe the 40-year-old, currently of no fixed address, could be in the Shirley area of the city, although he may be moving around.
Hampshire police said they are making enquiries to try to locate Campbell.
A police spokesperson said: “As part of those enquiries, we are looking for any information on his whereabouts.”
He is described as white, of average build, and around 5ft 9ins tall.
Officers are continuing to make enquiries in places he is known to frequent, and with people who may know him, but are keen to hear from anyone who has seen, or sees, him in the city.
